2 What is a tragic hero? A tragic hero is a person with heroic or potentially heroic qualities. This person is fated by the Gods or by some supernatural force to doom and destruction or at least to great suffering. He is destroyed by his own character flaws Aristotle once said that "A man doesn't become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall."

3 TRAGIC VOCAB HAMARTIA - a fatal flaw leading to the downfall of a tragic hero or heroine. HUBRIS – excessive pride PERIPETEIA sudden reversal of fortune or change in circumstances, especially in reference to fictional narrative.

4 ANAGNORISIS: a moment in a play or other work when a character makes a critical discovery.
NEMISIS: something or someone that a person cannot conquer, achieve, etc./rival/punishment CATHARSIS: cleansing of emotions/ great change that comes from an epiphany.

5 Some other common traits characteristic of a tragic hero:
 Hero must suffer more than he deserves.  Hero must be noble in nature, but imperfect so that the audience can see themselves in him.  Hero must have discovered his fate by his own actions, not by things happening to him.  Hero's story should arouse fear and empathy from the audience.  Hero must be physically or spiritually wounded by his experiences -- often resulting in his death (physical or spiritual).  The hero must be intelligent so he may learn from his mistakes.  He has to be faced with a very serious decision that he has to make.
