1 Grid references Learning objectives:
To know what grid references are and when to use them To be able to use 4 and 6 figure grid references

2 Grid References ‘Grid references’ are used to help us locate things on a map. They tell us where things are. Ordnance Survey maps use ‘grid lines’ to divide the map into ‘grid squares’. Using the grid lines we can give the location of something using ‘four-figure’ grid references and ‘six-figure’ grid references.

3 Grid lines that run vertically, up through the map are called EASTINGS
Grid lines that run vertically, up through the map are called EASTINGS. They are called this because their number increases as you move towards the East. Grid lines that go horizontally across the map are called NORTHINGS because their number increases as you move towards the North.
