1
Ride to a Greener Troy with the Troy Bike Club
Group Members: Mykayla Duda, Alexander Lomakin, and Madeleine Waller
2
Who We Are We are a bike share group based and operating in Troy
Our goals: Decrease use of vehicles and fossil fuels Decrease carbon dioxide emissions Promote the local economy in Troy
3
Why a Bike Share is Important
Carbon mitigation Financial benefits to users Community participation Promotion of wellbeing More foot traffic for local businesses Freshmen can’t have cars, and ultimately learn that they can walk anywhere they need to go. Other groups on the Rensselaer campus, however, use their cars for the same trips. By teaching them that they don’t need cars for all transportation needs, they’ll bring that ideal to other people and carry it for the rest of their lives. Did you know that… for every mile biked instead of driven, approximately one pound of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, is kept out of the atmosphere (Magill 2014). Include rationale information -- why does this project have priority over others?

Barriers Stakeholders
Funding is difficult to come by and balance Bike share kiosks and bikes are expensive The average bike should be replaced every 5-10 years The average bike costs between $330 and $600 People don’t make long trips on bikes Bikes can be stolen Students of RPI RPI Citizens of Troy The Troy city government Advertisers viaCycle
6
Our Solution: viaCycle
How it works People register themselves online Subscribers can call or text to unlock a bike from any viaCycle rack Bikes can be locked on other racks while they are out Charges are based on the length of time the bike is away from a viaCycle rack Bikes have built in GPS Every bike costs $1000 to $1500 per bike upfront $20 per bike per month 10 bikes for every 100 people Total cost for 10 bikes: $10,000-15,000 upfront One year for 10 bikes: $2,400 “...the cost to launch the program is one-third as much as kiosk-based sharing systems” (Jerome 2013) Address cost comparison to other systems and possible grants and funding.

Timeline Build management team and start interacting with students at RPI One year trial at RPI to gather data Website and app created Advertisement on bikes, website, and app sold to local businesses Examine data at end of Spring Semester 2017 and determine best expansion Expand into Troy if data is positive Work with city government to place bike racks Maintain a social media and physical presence in Troy Booth in farmer’s market Start gathering subscribers in the city Start a program to have a group ride around Troy once every weekend During Saturday alongside the farmer’s market Stop every ride at a certain sponsoring business
