Harlem Renaissance Week 7: Writing Genres

Your Journal You need to have your journal out.
Open to the first clean page. At the top of this page write today’s date and : IMAGE WRITING

The Envelope Your group is being given an envelope. Don’t open it yet.
Inside there are laminated images. Without talking take one image out of the envelope. Look at it for a bit, but do not share your thoughts or image with anyone. Place any unused images back in the envelope.

First Prompt: In your journal, write the word narrative
Pretend you are the artist, under the word narrative, write a narrative about what you were thinking as you created this work of art. (You have 5 minutes)

Pass the Image to the person on your right.
NO TALKING!

Second Prompt: In your journal, write the word prose
From what you can see in this new image write a piece of prose that tells what is happening. (You have 5 minutes)

Third Prompt: In your journal, write the word research
You are a scientist who studies art and culture. Describe this piece in as much detail as you can using only visible facts. (You have 5 minutes)

Fourth Prompt: In your journal, write the word Speech
You are a speech writer and this is the award winning art piece from an international competition. Write a speech telling why it won. (You have 5 minutes)

Line up: Line up each of the images your group used on the table so that everyone can see. In your journal, jot down a few words next to each paragraph so you can recall the image. (For example, woman ironing).

If you have time, you can do this for a second image.
Sharing Time: Take turns going around the table to read what each person wrote about that image. If you have time, you can do this for a second image. ime

Individual Work Read through each of the entries you made in your notebook today. Place a star next to the one you like best. Your homework is to take ONE of the entries and expand on it. Elaborate, revise, edit and leave this work in your journal on a fresh page titled: Genre Work.
