2 PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
Demonstrate the proper dismount and location to park the bicycle for the primary officer. Demonstrate the proper dismount and location to park the bicycle for the secondary officer List the four things never to do while conducting a traffic stop on a Mt.Bike. Bicycle officers patrol like any other cops but without the protection that a patrol car provides. Gone is the shotgun, the MDT,the bluelights,the strong radio signal, the ability to keep traffic off of your back etc.... For safety reasons, traffic stops and field interviews must be handled in a different way.

3 TRAFFIC STOPS SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. Be readily identifiable as a Police Officer. A. Wear bright colored uniforms. B. Use a whistle on a lanyard around your neck. 2. Once you have a violators attention, ask them to pull over safely. 3. Advise the dispatcher of your location, vehicle tag number, description of the vehicle, number of occupants.

4. Primary officer, exit the bike with a crossover dismount and use the kickstand. Park the bike off-set on the drivers side (can visually see down the drivers side of the vehicle). DO NOT park directly behind the vehicle. * If the bicycle falls over from the kickstand, leave it and pick it up later, when it’s safe to do so.

Secondary officer - Get into a crossover and ride to the passenger side or sidewalk and dismount, laying the bike down on its side. Pick bike up later after the approach and when it’s safe to do so.

Once contact is made, have the violator turn the flashers on and turn the ignition off. More suspicious stops, have the violator take the keys out of the ignition and place them on the roof or dash. If possible, make your approach on the passenger side of the vehicle. This keeps you out of the road..

8. Request a patrol car if traffic is heavy. 9. Get on the passenger side of the vehicle when running radio checks or issuing citations.

10 Traffic Stop NO NO’s 1. NEVER - Cling to a vehicle. 2. NEVER - Pull in front of a vehicle to get the violator to stop. 3. NEVER - Park in front of a vehicle. 4. NEVER - Park behind a vehicle.
