2 Glaze Glaze is made of glass related compounds that melt at very high temperatures to form a glassy coating Makes pottery water-proof Used for decoration and function

3 Low-Fire Colored Glaze (1860ºF)
Types Low-Fire Colored Glaze (1860ºF) High-Fire Glaze (2350ºF)

4 Low-Fire Glaze (1860ºF) In small plastic containers Brush it on
Three coats Bright, happy colors

5 Turns out something like this:

6 High-Fire Glaze (2350ºF) In the buckets Glassy Food-safe
Use tongs to dip Wipe off bottom!!!

7 Turns out something like this:

8 How to High-Fire glaze Stir up glaze for 1 minute with your arm
Blow dust off project Hold with TONGS Dip for 2 seconds Hold still and let dry Don’t touch when wet

9 WIPE OFF THE BOTTOM & 1/2 inch up the side of pot!
Glaze becomes like red hot liquid glass in the kiln If its on the bottom of your project, it will stick to the kiln shelf I will have to break it to get it off!

10 Glaze drips downward When it’s a hot liquid, it drips downward
Wipe up about 1/2 an inch up the side

11 WIPE OFF THE BOTTOM!

12 Put it back on the shelf to dry
If you mess up…its OK! Wash it off in the sink Put it back on the shelf to dry Try again TOMORROW!

13 Crawling The separation of a glaze coating from the clay caused by too heavy application, or glazing a dusty or dirty pot This results in exposed areas of unglazed clay.

14 Dry foot to clean the bottom of a glazed piece before firing

15 Wax Resist a method of decorating pottery by brushing on a design with a hot melted wax emulsion this will prevent an applied stain or glaze from adhering to the decorated portions
