Why make a stratigraphic column…
Examines change over time at a single location. Useful for visualizing stratigraphic patterns in multiple locations, can be used to identify lithostratigraphic units and correlate them over a wide area. A way to look at fossil ranges or geochemical data in their geological context.

Some principles to keep in mind:
We are working in units of stratigraphic height, as if beds were stacked vertically. So… Surfaces along strike on the same bed are stratigraphically equivalent, even if they are at different topographic elevations. Horizontal scale represents grain size or carbonate texture in our strat column – this may closely resemble unit resistivity, but grain size takes precedence Keep resolution in mind; it will be difficult to depict features of <1 m. thickness at this scale – BUT smaller features can be described in the accompanying text.
