3 Text Structure Characters - Any person/animal/figure represented in a literary work Setting - Time and Place of the text Conflict - The main problem affecting the plot Plot - The entire story line, start to finish. (rising action, conflict, climax, falling action) Theme - The overall message/lesson of the text

4 Non-Fiction Cause and Effect - If X…, then Y… Focusing on what causes X and the effect of that something Sequence - Told in order of occurrence Problem and Solution - Presents a problem and proposes a possible solution Description - Detailed characteristics of X Compare & Contrast - Describing how two or more things are alike and different

5 Significant Terms & Text Effects
Bias - Opinion/subjective/prejudice for or against something *Do not use bias pieces as evidence! Verify your sources. Ethos - Ethics. The speaker building credibility/rapport/authority with their audience. Logos - Logic. The facts, reasoning, and actual proof to support an argument. Pathos - Passion. The emotional appeal of the argument to generate empathy.

6 Significant Terms & Text Effects
Author’s Craft - Voice, Diction, Tone & Purpose! Author’s Purpose - The message. Why they’re speaking/writing. Expository Text - Explains and/or analyzes information by presenting an idea and evidence with an objective voice. Persuasive Text - Used to convince the reader to agree with X. Also known as argumentative.
