Task Use the timetable below to plan out how you will manage completing the tasks alongside your other commitments. Fill in any out of school activities/ plans you have to ensure you can fit your schedule around the successful completion of this booklet. If you need help with a task from an adult or a peer make sure you have arranged this in the timetable too. 2 Task Choose one country in South America to study! Expected Outcome Your chosen country highlighted on the map with a range of reasons for why this country has been chosen. Skills Audit Geographic enquiry, place knowledge Your first task is to choose a country to focus on! Will it be somewhere you know something about already? Or somewhere you know nothing about? Colour in the country you are focusing on. Draw and colour in their flag in the rectangular box. Give a range of reasons around the map to explain why you have chosen this country. 3 Task This is the Place Wheel, geographers use this to describe places to each other. Choose an image of the capital city of your chosen country which you can take from Google Images. Expected Outcome Show an understanding of different types of geography and use them to effectively describe your local area. Skills Audit Description, use of key vocabulary Where is this place? What are the key landmarks in this area? (Starting with the most important) What are the people in this place thinking and feeling? What are the physical features of this area? (climate, topography, biomes, unusual phenomena) What is ______________ like? Place an image here. How is this place affecting your senses? (sights, smells, sounds) What are the human features of this area? (settlements, industry, key architecture, population)

4 Task Produce a hand-drawn map of the country you have chosen to study. Expected Outcome A hand-drawn map which shows an understanding of key physical and human features. Skills Audit Mapping, evaluation, research, data presentation When maps are produced they represent the views of those who use and produce them, that is why the UK is in the centre of every map you use in school. This task is about you producing a map which tells others about your chosen country. Your task is to look at a range of maps of your chosen country and then produce your own map inspired by what you have learnt about the geography of your chosen country. 5 Task Research your chosen country. Expected Outcome A factfile about your chosen country containing information you have researched and selected, which is appropriate to use in the factfile. Skills Audit Research, selecting data, using a range of sources, referencing, key vocabulary Using secondary data is important for geographers in developing an understanding of the processes within a place we have not visited. Your task is to produce a factfile. Begin by deciding the information which should be included as headings, each of these should be named using key vocabulary. Use the websites below as a starting point, fill the factfile with useful information about your chosen country which provides relevant information about the chosen country. 6 Task Make notes on a video about tourism in your chosen country.
Expected Outcome Choose an appropriate video on tourism in your chosen country and make notes on the information in the video. Skills Audit Research, note-taking, place knowledge Watch a video aimed attracting tourists to your chosen country. During the video make notes on the reasons tourists are attracted to your chosen country for a holiday. Please include the name of the video and the website (or other source) the video is from. In tutor time, discuss with a peer why they should go to this country on holiday in the future. Notes from tutor time discussion Challenge task: Watch a broader range of videos made by different organisations and people to expand your reasons for visiting this nation.

7 Task Identify problems associated with tourism. Expected Outcome Read an article about the problems tourism has caused in your chosen country and highlight the key information. Skills Audit Research, selecting information Find an article about the problems associated with tourism in your chosen country. The aim of this task is to highlight the most important information within the article and then summarise what you have learnt. Begin by going through the article with a highlighter pen and highlighting no more than 15 words. This is to ensure you are only highlighting the most important information in your article. When you have done this, write your own short summary of the article to show you have comprehended the problems discussed in the article. 8 Task Identify solutions to the problems caused by tourism. Expected Outcome Identify an appropriate and sustainable solution to problems associated with tourism. Skills Audit Research, considering sustainability An important skill for geographers is using examples in your work to support points you are trying to make. To begin with choose a problem associated with tourism you found out about in task 7 and then make a list of many ideas as you can of ways to solve this problem – they can be as creative and original as you like. Now re-read your list and try choose 3 ideas you feel are the most appropriate for the country you have chosen to study. Try research examples of these ideas in action in other parts of the world – how successful have they been? When you have researched all three choose the one idea which is most suitable for your chosen country and explain why it is an appropriate and sustainable choice for your country in one paragraph. 9 Task Ecotourism case study Expected Outcome
Produce a case study for an example of ecotourism in your chosen country. Skills Audit Research, producing a case study, data presentation, revision technique Tourism can be made to be positive for local people, their economy and the environment, this is done through applying the idea of ecotourism. You can find out more at this website: Geographers are expected to have a wide place knowledge, however there are some places we know about in more detail to use as detailed examples in our work – these are called case studies. Your task is to produce a case study for an ecotourism resort in your chosen country. Name: Location: Ecotourist features: How it is sustainable: Any problems with the resort: Present this in the box below as a flashcard – short, sharp pieces of information which can be revised quickly and easily.
