2 Who wrote the Emancipation Proclamation?
Abraham  Lincoln

3 WHEN WAS THE DOCUMENT WRITTEN?
JANUARY 1, 1863 "Lincoln issued a preliminary proclamation warning that in all states still in rebellion on January 1, 1863, he would declare their slaves “then, thenceforward, and forever free" -From history.com/this-day-in- history

4 Why was it written? "That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free. And I hereby enjoin upon the people so declared to be free to abstain from all violence, unless in necessary self- defense” - from the proclamation Abraham Lincoln wrote this document during the Civil War to try and free slaves in the United States.

5 How? Lincoln was able to issue the emancipation proclamation after the Battle of Antietam.  He needed a major Union victory in order to issue it.

6 Lincoln and the Emancipation PROCLAMATION'S impact
Many norther's responded to the proclamation in a positive way  People who didn't like Lincoln now became fond of him and praised the Proclamation  William Lloyd Garrison thought that the Proclamation should have been made to abolish slavery for good  Lincoln only took care of slavery in areas that he was not involved in which caused issues in the other states that were not involved in the Proclamation The Proclamation didn’t actually free many slaves at all "Emancipation Proclamation did not free a single slave, it was an important turning point in the war, transforming the fight to preserve the nation into a battle for human freedom." -history.com

7 Lincoln's legacy Northern supporters and critics joined together after Lincoln's tragic death  Seen as a hero and symbolized freedom  Helped the nation through difficult times  People will miss his strong, convictive voice in the tough upcoming days following his death  Lincoln was portrayed to a worshipping public as a self-made man, the liberator of the slaves, and the savior of the Union who had given his life so that others could be free. - millercenter.org

8 Underlying causes Lincoln doesn’t like slavery and wants to put an end to it Constructs the Emancipation Proclamation to help free slaves in confederate states Not setting good example for other countries around the world The US wants to be the best at everything and yet we had slavery Other countries, such as Great Britain, disagreed with slavery therefore they didn’t aid the Confederacy
