21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus' side, 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25 So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.

In previous chapters, Jesus performs a miracle and then explains, but here, He explains and then rises after the crucifixion
The disciples are partners here versus being primarily observers

No “last supper” (communion) like the Synoptic Gospels
The word group uses of “love” and “believe” are essentially reversed from here on. That is, believe is used more often in 1-12 and love is used more often in 13-21
Köstenberger and others see Jesus as similar to Moses in his farewell in Deuteronomy

15. Observations
Verses 21 – 30
Just as v.1 set the stage for last weeks passage, v.21 sets the the stage for this section. Even though he had alluded to it earlier (John 6:70 and 13:18), his demeanor or countenance gets their attention (Köstenberger, pp ).
They still don’t know who it is, but they now begin to try and find out of whom Jesus is speaking. Peter takes the lead, again.
Even John does not know after speaking with Jesus. In fact, Jesus’ gesture to Judas seems to have not even aroused the slightest suspicion.

Verses 21 – 30
This interlude with Judas was Judas’ last chance to make amends for his sinful attitude of unbelief and Jesus’ last offer of grace to him
John’s statement in v.30 that it was night has all the symbolic emphasis as other references to light and dark throughout the rest of his Gospel (John 3:19; 8:12; 12:35,46)

Verses 31 – 38
As Köstenberger points out on p.136, now the stage is set for the completion of Christ’s glorification (Romans 3:21-26).
Once Judas leaves, events move very quickly toward Jesus’ arrest, trial and crucifixion.
Most scholars believe that this is where the Upper Room Discourse begins, which sets this Gospel apart from all the others (i.e., the Synoptic Gospels: Matthew, Mark, and Luke).

Verses 31 – 38
John only uses the term “little children” here in his Gospel, but he often uses it in his first epistle (1 John 2:1,12,28).
The “new commandment” in vv has been described as John’s great commission for the Church.
Peter’s question in v.36 begins a series of questions by individual disciples that will be addressed beginning in this discourse here and continued in chapter 14.

Köstenberger does a good job of describing “troubled” in v.21. What kind of things trouble you spiritually? Do they relate at all to what troubled Jesus?
What things were new about the command Jesus gave in vv.34-35? What specific things from this chapter can you do to show love for your fellow believers?

Peter and Judas are the only disciples named in this chapter. Do you think Peter was overzealous or overconfident? Can you think of a time in your life that your confidence got you in trouble spiritually?
