Participles and Participial Phrases

Participles A participle is a verb form that acts as an adjective.
Ex. The exhausted campers found a crumbling schoolhouse.

Present Participles The present participle always ends in –ing.
Ex. Creaking eerily, the door swung open.

Past Participles The past participle of a regular verb ends in –ed. Irregular verbs’ past participles are formed in a variety of ways. Ex. Regular: The deserted building was old and decrepit. Irregular: Fallen bricks blocked the entry. Copy chart from bottom of P. 172 in textbook.

Participial Phrases A participial phrase consists of a participle plus its modifiers and complements. Ex. They spied a shape lurking in the dark shadows. Frightened by the sight, they stopped cold.
