Problem Statement
Does water expand with heat?

3. Hypothesis
If I heat water for a few minutes, then the water will expand.

4. Materials Two Straws Food coloring Three 60 watt bulb
Two 355 ml bottle
Water
Drill
Hot glue gun
Ruler
Clock/stopwatch

5. Procedures
Fill bottle with water all the way to the top and add food coloring. Make sure to leave no air in the bottle.
Drill hole in bottle cap that is the right size for the straw to fit in.
Place cap on the bottle along with straw and hot glue cap and straw so no water leaks out.
Turn light bulb on and allow it to warm up.
Place bottle with straw in front of light bulb.
Measure initial height of water with ruler and begin timer. Make sure to record time as well.
Measure at 15, 30, and 45 minutes.
Repeat experiment 3 times.

6. Variables/Constants
The independent variable is the heat added to the water
The dependent variable is the water’s volume due to the heat added.
The constant was the equal amount of water in each of the bottles.

8. Results
The results from the trials that had one light bulb were similar to the trials with two light bulbs. The amount of water level rise varied slightly between each of the different time trials, especially from the first to the second. The amount of heat correlated to the amount of water expansion.

9. Conclusion
The results supported my hypothesis; the water level would rise if heat is added. The project demonstrated that the amount of heat added affects how much the water level rose. The amount of food coloring in the water, as well as using the same water throughout the experiment; might have affected the result by changing the water level rise. I discovered that we have to be aware of how water expansion will affect us in the future especially related to sea level rise.

10. Application
The result of this project could be used to make people aware of sea level rise and perhaps in the future design an instrument that measures sea level rise.
