1 What is so relevant about this phrase and these people ?
“KING OF KINGS” What is so relevant about this phrase and these people ? By the end of the lesson you should be able to tell me how these people relate to the poem. Adolf Hitler Vladimir Putin Moammar Gadhafi

2 CONTEXT In 1817 Percy Shelley and his friend Horace Smith decided to have a sonnet competition. Shelley and Smith chose a partially-destroyed statue of RamessesII ("Ozymandias") that was making its way from Egypt to London. A sonnet has a structure of 14 lines and can have several structural ingredients: a volta, rhyming couplet and iambic pentameter.

3 At the age of fourteen, Ramesses II took to the throne
At the age of fourteen, Ramesses II took to the throne. He became the most powerful pharaoh of the Egyptian Empire because he had created a colossal military force to take control of Syria and Sudan. After 30 years of power there was a Sed Festival to honour his reign. He was ritually transformed into a god. He built extensively across Egypt all over to Nubia. He was known for changing sculpturing practices so that details of his face were perfectly clear on statues.

4 Let’s listen to the poem

5 Volta: The twist in the poem.
Ozymandias “Visage”: French for face “Pedestal”: the base of the statue “ye mighty”: The Mighty I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed: And on the pedestal these words appear: 'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!' Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away Volta: The twist in the poem.

6 “a traveller” -not specific who it is -adds some mystery -distances Shelley’s views in the poem. “antique” is an adjective it means old. I met a traveller from an antique land Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone The legs were “vast” to intimidate people who looked at the statue. “trunkless” means without a torso. Even though they are use legs they don’t have a body.

7 The statue now stands in a remote and deserted place
The statue now stands in a remote and deserted place. A place that was once ruled by a leader and a place of battle and control. Lots of commas, possibly to build your anticipation. What’s near them? What’s on the sand? Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk, a shattered visage lies “shattered visage” a visage is a face. The face is shattered and broken. A symbol that his power has broken. “trunkless” means without a torso. Even though they are use legs they don’t have a body.

8 And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
“wrinkled” (adjective) illustrates that he was easily angered And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Alliteration of a sharp ‘c’ sound to stress his brutality

9 The sculptor captured Ozymandias’ nastiness very easily.
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The adjective “lifeless” immediately makes us think of deaths that he caused “stamped” is a vicious verb, it shows he abused his power to harm others

10 “mocked” means to tease or scorn others
“mocked” means to tease or scorn others. Shelley is showing us that he looked down on others. The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:

11 The fact is it on a pedestal shows that he wanted to be important.
And on the pedestal these words appear: 'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!' “look” imperative word. He commanded that other rulers looked at his statue and be frightened by him.
