*Nicotine *Bloodstream *Brain *Receptors (structures on nerve cells) *Heart beats faster and blood pressure rises. *Brain then increases # of receptors. *The more receptors, the more nicotine needed.

Tolerance-a condition in which a user needs more of a drug to get the same effect.
Physical Dependence- is when the user relies on the drug to feel normal. Withdrawal-the way in which the body responds when a dependent person stops using a drug.

Quitting 70 % of adult smokers want to quit.
Only 4-5% are able to quit. Withdrawal symptoms: headaches, dizziness, trouble sleeping, depression, moodiness.

Help to Quit Support group and counseling.
Nonprescription nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)-Gum, patches, lozenges. Prescription NRT-inhalers and nicotine nasal sprays. Prescription medications that block nicotine’s actions in the brain. Regular exercise program.
