What is the Role of EO in support to sectoral decision making?
In Uganda, EOs are used to: Reduce disaster risks (NECOC, OPM) Improved weather products (Met. Authority) Support agriculture development (MAAIF/UN systems) Improve Public Health management (MoH/UN systems) Improve land use management and Urban planning (MoL/KCCA) Support water and other resources such as minerals mapping and monitoring e.t.c (MoL, MoWE).

Why is the use of EO still low in Africa? Where is the problem?
Low capacity development (both tools and know how) Limited general knowledge of the science and application of EOs. (Compare EOs with mobile phones!!!) High initial costs for infrastructure development Limited support from bilateral donor/development partners Limited involvement of business/private sector Therefore, as a result; EO application is piece meal, and hence low appreciation of its capability.
8
How can AfriGEOSS and/or GEO help?
Advocacy (create visibility of the challenges, opportunities) Capacity development (through identified needs) Technical Assistance (to bring know how) Joint project development and implementation (support EO policy development across all African countries, funds sourcing) Coordination networking (data and product sharing principals, national coordination frameworks-GEO Principals)
