Garfield
Garfield is a fat, lazy, cynical, endearing cat. Born in the kitchen of Mamma Leoni’s Italian rest aunt, he weighed five pounds, six ounces at birth and right from the start he showed a passion for Italian food. The restaurant owner, forced too choose between Garfield and closing his doors for lack of pasta, sold Garfield to a pet store. Garfield thought he was a goner until Jon Arbuckle walked in the door.

Main characteristics: Considers cats to be the most highly developed species on the planet. Particularly loathes Mondays and raisins, adores TV and lasagna.
Personality: He’s a wisecracking, nap-taking, coffee-guzzling, lasagna-loving, Monday-hating, dog-punting, spider-whacking, mailman-mauling fat cat!

17. JON ARBUCKLE
Garfield and Odie’s hapless owner.  Jon is decent but dull.  Jon is a cartoonist, but he mostly stays busy playing straight man to his pets.
1st appearance: June 19, 1978
Main characteristics: Hopelessly unhip…Jon’s wardrobe comes straight out of the circus. He doesn’t fare any better at romance, either. Jon is at the mercy of his pets, particularly Garfield, who is the true “master” of the house.
Personality: A simple nature, Jon spends his time waiting for a soulmate and asking existential questions (A polka-dot shirt or a checkered shirt?) Catchphrase: “I don’t have a catchphrase.”

Main characteristics: Jon’s number two pet – Garfield loves to give Odie a good boot — he really can’t be blamed. Odie is just so “kick-offable.”
Personality: Adorable, playful, and drools a lot. He’s thick as a brick…his IQ is off the bottom of the scale.

Main characteristics: Garfield’s official girlfriend in the story. Arlene is a gap-toothed gal with a pouty pucker! Arlene brings a bit of romance to Garfield’s life, but don’t look for anything serious to develop. Garfield is still looking for a mate who accept him for what he is…perfect in every way.
Catchphrase: “Love means sharing your dinner…I’m not holding my breath for Garfield.”

Main characteristics: Self-proclaimed “Cutest Kitten in the World,” Nermal is always there to show Garfield how young and fit he is and how old and lazy Garfield is. But Garfield knows how to keep Nermal in check – usually be shipping him to Abu Dhabi or Ouagadougou.
Personality: Annoying and cloying — Nermal likes the simple things in life, like looking at himself in a mirror!
