Humans are capable of knowing and of loving their Creator with free will, each with the individual dignity of a person

Formation of a moral conscience is a lifelong task, assisted by the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the witness and advice of others, guided by the teaching of the Church, and nurtured through prayer.

Free will is the ability to voluntarily choose good or bad actions.
Choosing good deepens our relationship with God, while choosing evil injures that relationship and leads to the slavery of sin.

Moral conscience is a judgment of reason which urges a person to do good and avoid evil
It is the “inner voice” that helps us to judge the morality of our actions and take responsibility for our actions
A prudent person can hear the voice of God who speaks to him or her

Sin is a word or act contrary to the God’s Law, or the failure to act uprightly

One commits a sin when he or she:
has full knowledge that the act is wrong
has freedom to choose whether or not to act and
deliberately chooses to act (or fail to act)

Virtues are the habitual and firm dispositions to do good
A virtue must be developed through practice until it becomes easy to do

Prudence – directs us toward good and helps us to choose the right path
Justice – guides us to give God and others what is due them
Fortitude – the strength to do the right thing, even when it is difficult
Temperance – helps us to control our attraction to pleasure so that our desires are kept within proper limits

Hope – trust that God will always be with us and help us to live in his friendship
Charity – helps us love God above all things and love our neighbor as ourselves
