Space Exploration Please get out your notebooks and label the next free page « Space Exploration ». Then answer the following question in your notebook: Why do you think man has wanted to explore space?
2
Today you will need a partner. Please sit with them.
Then answer the following question together: Why do you think man has wanted to explore space?
3
Space exploration has allowed humans to learn about:
the workings of the solar system the composition of planets and moons effects of many types of solar radiation on the Earth and its inhabitants In preparing for the challenges of space exploration, people have developed tools and products that have become very important in enriching our lives.
4
RUN, READ, RECORD ACTIVITY
You will be up and out of your seats today in order to record important information Based on your seat row, you will go to a designated area of the classroom You will be reading the information at each “Information Station” There is a catch…. You can not take your notebook…you must read the information, remember it and then write it down Make as many trips as you need to get all the information
5
QUESTIONS????? I will set a timer
You must get all the information in the time allowed Finish early, help your neighbor Make sure everyone in your row has all of the correct information
6
Example: Draw in your notebook….
Draw an oval in the center Write LRMS in the center oval Draw 4 lines out from the center
7
Write in Your Diagram - LRMS
We have 6, 7, and 8th grade students We are the lightning Our principal is Mrs. Sinders We are a year-round school
8
Draw in your notebook…. Draw an oval in the center
Write Probes in the center oval Draw 4 lines out from the center
9
Write in Your Diagram - Probes
Spacecraft that drops into a planet’s atmosphere No astronauts onboard Collects information and sends it back to scientists on Earth Example: Voyager – 36 years old
10
Space Probes over Time Sputnik Explorer 1
11
Space Probes Today NASA's Voyager 1: 1st human-made object to travel beyond the solar system About 12 billion miles from our sun. Traveled beyond Neptune into interstellar space
12
Voyager Probes
13
Draw in your notebook…. Draw an oval in the center
Write International Space Station in the center oval Draw 4 lines out from the center
14
Write in Your Diagram - ISS
Known as ISS A combined effort of 15 different countries Astronauts to live there for months Conduct research that cannot be done on Earth tries
15
Interesting ISS Facts The size of a football field
Weighs 924,739 pounds. Has more livable room than a conventional six- bedroom house with 2 bathrooms, a gymnasium and a 360-degree bay window.
16
Video on ISS
17
Draw in your notebook…. Draw an oval in the center
Write Telescopes in the center oval Draw 4 lines out from the center
18
Write in Your Diagram - Telescopes
Collect electromagnetic (light) radiation Allows us to see far away objects in space 1st telescope invented over 400 years ago Example: Hubble Telescope
19
Hubble Telescope Orbits Earth and focuses on distant objects within our solar system and Universe.
20
Launch of Space Shuttle Discovery Hubble Space Telescope on board April 24, 1990
21
Observatories/Telescopes
NASA's fleet of "Great Observatories“: Hubble Space Telescope, Spitizer Space Telescope The Chandra X-ray Observatory (allows scientists from around the world to obtain X-ray images of exotic environments to help understand the structure and evolution of the universe) now de-orbited Compton Gamma Ray Observatory Other telescopes, such as the Fermi-Gamma-ray Space Telescope has unveiled a previously unseen structure centered in the Milky Way. The feature spans 50,000 light-years and may be the remnant of an eruption from a supersized black hole at the center of our galaxy.

Draw in your notebook…. Draw an oval in the center
Write NASA Spinoffs in the center oval Draw 4 lines out from the center
24
Write In Your Diagram - Spinoffs
Technology that was developed for astronauts and space exploration BUT now benefits us on Earth! Microwaves Hand held calculators Bar Coding
