4 The University’s maritime face
IN MARI VIA TUA The University’s maritime face The historical roots of economic science at the University of Gdańsk date back to 1942 and the creation of the Maritime Institute in Warsaw as part of the Secret University of Western Lands. The Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Management, located in Sopot, have their roots in the Higher School of Maritime Trade in Gdynia which continued the traditions of the Secret University of Western Lands after 1945.

IN MARI VIA TUA The University’s maritime face The University of Gdańsk pays close attention to research into marine and maritime studies. By fulfiling its motto ’In mari via tua’ (The sea is your way), the University of Gdańsk strives towards the development of the Pomeranian region, whose greatest asset is indeed the sea. One of its great initiatives is the National Centre for Baltic Research, which brings together local authorities and Pomeranian academic institutions to achieve the goals of Polish maritime policy.

The Institute of Oceanography’s Marine Station in Hel Seal Center in Hel (more than 400,000 visitors per year) ‘Oceanograf 2’, cutting-edge research vessel of the University’s Institute of Oceanography, launched in 2016 research into the course of life in the Baltic Sea reintroduction of endangered marine species ‘Blue school’ educational program for high school students

Faculty of Biology Biological Station on Sobieszewo Island leading program ‘Protecting the Wildlife of Sobieszewo Island’ ‘Sand Dune Laboratory’ ─ establishing an artificial habitat for psammofile species migrated from the construction site of DCT terminal ‘Naturalist Island’ ─ educational workshops for elementary and high schools. Bird Migration Research Center in Przebendowo research into bird routes and migration ‘Operation Baltic’ ─ ringing of spring migrants to the Baltic Sea coast

Cooperation with 120 universities from most countries in Europe and worldwide. International exchange of students, teaching and administrative staff: Over 160 international bilateral contracts Over 350 contracts as part of the ERASMUS+ program Participation in the international and national development programmes e.g.: Horizon 2020 University has already participated in the implementation of 73 projects under the Framework Programmes and Horizon Crystal Brussels Prize received in 2013 in the category of Research and Development Units.
