The meaning of public speaking
It is speaking to a group of people in a structured , deliberate manner intended to inform , influence or entertain listeners . Effective public speaking can be learned by following few simple points . A good speaker will be organized and have the confidence to present the substance of the speech to an audience.

Being able to speak effectively is valuable skill that can be learned as a student and applied later in life.

The speech recipe The organized speaker will avoid the errors of people who talk in public , but do not necessarily make good speeches . The organized speech will follow the following three points : Headline (Introduction) :capture your audiences attention by giving them a reason for listening .this is where you tell your audience what you are going to talk about on the given topic.

Cont …. Main Body : Break your ideas into separate points that explain or support your theme. This is where your audience is told about the topic . Echo (Conclusion) : Revisit your headline and summarize your main idea by referring back to the points made in your body. This tells them what you have told them.

Organizing your Material
Introduction 10 – 15 Percent Body is almost 75 percent Conclusion 10 percent

Introduction : “your first ten words are more important than your next ten minutes” The introduction is short but it should accomplish a great deal. Get attention of audiences and make them want to listen and inform that the subject concerns them

BODY This is the longest part of your presentation and gives important facts you are covering. Select a lead sentence and expand on it. Move from the known to the unknown. Remember to stick to the subject Make your language simple and colorful

CONCLUSIONS : Careful planning is required since conclusion is vital part of the presentation. Remember in your conclusion : Don’t introduce new materials Avoid false endings End with the idea you most want remembered. Summarize without repeating the speech Stop talking before you begin walking away.

Cont ….. In planning your conclusion , consider the following suggestions : Summarize important points one by one. Use a quotation, a story or a peom that summarizes the importance of what you have said. Ask questions Then answer the question by stating it clearly. Call for a reaction on the part of the audience. challenge them to do something.

Preparing to give Speech
a speech should be prepared far enough in advance to allow time for adequate practice. Memorize the introduction and conclusion , you should never look at your notes for those important parties of the speech.

Arrival : Arrive early enough to check the facilities. Check the room temperature. Test the Microphone. Eat before going to a program, even if a meal is provided . most speakers don’t perform as well on a full stomach. this will not be your last “breakfast or supper” . perhaps you can arrange to have your meal served after you speak. If not , eat and drink lightly during the meal.

Microphone Tips : A microphone can be your best aid or worst enemy. A mike does not guarantee for quality. Don’t use a mike unless it is necessary. A mike testing is conducted by speaking not thumping, tapping or blowing. This test should be conducted before you begin the program.

Delivery your speech : After a chairperson introduces you :
Rise and walk to the lectern. Take a deep breath and exhale slowly. Smile Establish eye contact with at least three friendly faces. Adjust the microphone Wait until the audience is quiet. Don’t rush, give them time to look you over. Briefly acknowledge your introduction if necessary Begin speaking , you are in control.

Feeling some nervousness before giving a speech is natural and healthy . it allows you care about doing well. But too much nervousness can be detrimental .here is how you can control your nervousness and make memorable presentations : Know the room. Know the audience

Speaking in public is not inherently stressful You don’t have to be brilliant or perfect to succeed All you need is two or three main points You also need a purpose that is right for the task The best way to succeed is NOT to consider yourself a public speaker

You don’t have to control the behavior of your audience. The more you prepare the worst you will do. “over preparing , instead develop confidence and trust in your natural ability to succeed” Your audience truly want you to succeed
