Fractions on a Number Line
2
We are going to plot ¾ on a number line!
-The first thing we need to do is make a number line: -Since a fraction represents parts of a number, our number line needs to start at 0 and stop at 1. -Next, we need to determine how many sections this number line needs to be partitioned into. How can we figure out how many equal sections we will need? 1
3
The denominator of a fraction lets us know how many equal sections we need!
- Since our fraction (3/4) has a denominator of 4, we will need 4 equal sections! 1 2 3 4 1 * Because there are 4 equal sections, each section is worth ¼ of the number line.

But, how do we figure out where ¾ goes on the number line?
We look at the numerator! -The numerator shows how many “jumps” we need to make on our number line. *Remember to start at 0! 1 2 3 1 Our ending point is where we plot our fraction

Recap! -Step 1: Draw a number line that starts at 0 and ends at 1. -Step 2: Look at the denominator to determine how many sections the number line will need. -Step 3: Use the numerator to determine the number of “jumps” you need to make on the number line. -Step 4: Plot your fraction! -Step 1: -Step 2: -Step 3: 1 5/6 1 5/6 1 5/6
