4. The book is too easy!
The book was used for instruction with a supportive introduction, vocabulary, word work, strategy teaching and prompting by the teacher.
It isn’t the first time your child has read the book…on purpose.
Thinking beyond the text and about the author’s decisions/craft.
The pictures are just as important as the words!
Meaning making is your child’s top priority.
Fluency supports meaning making.

5. Fluency, fluency, fluency
WHY?? It’s how we speak, think, and process.
In service of comprehension
It’s not just about speed! There are 6 dimensions of fluency:
Pausing
Phrasing
Stress
Intonation
Rate
Integration

6. Moving past “sound it out”

7. When your child… Does nothing… It is so much fun to jump!
It is fun to play jump racing!
Does nothing…
Skips or adds words…
Says the first sound and guesses the rest…
“Try something.”
“What can you try?”
“Look at the picture. Start the word.”
“You said ___. That starts the same, but it doesn’t look right.”
“Does that look right at the end of the word?”
“Does that make sense? Try again.”
“Did that look right?”
“Did that match what you see?”
“Try that again with your finger.”

8. When your child… puh…luh.. It is fun to poke jump rope. aa…yuh…
Chops the sounds /doesn’t blend…
Says words that don’t make sense…
Is overwhelmed by long words…
“Blend your sounds together.”
“Say the whole word when you know it.”
“Find a part you know.”
“Reread that part and think about what makes sense.”
It’s okay to tell!
“You said___ does that make sense?”
“Read that again to make sense.”

9. How do I get in 20 Minutes?
Think outside the box about where reading can happen!
Read to me while I cook.
Read to me while getting ready for bed.
Read to me in the car.
Listen to books on CD.
Read and listen online:
