Students Taking Action with Recognition
STAR in Nebraska is divided into two major categories: Nebraska STAR Events at the District and State levels National STAR Events at the District, State and National levels Two categories include Junior (grades 7-9) and Senior (grades 10-12) **All STAR events use the FCCLA Planning Process.** Complete rules can be found at the state ( and national (fcclainc.org) websites.

Nebraska STAR Consumer Issues – Junior (7-9 grades) only
Can advance to State, but does not go on to Nationals. 1-3 participants in the presentation events. Very similar to Illustrated Talk National event. Consumer Issues – Junior (7-9 grades) only Money issues, buying, related to Financial Fitness Family Challenges and Issues – Jr. & Sr. Relationships, related to Families First Health and Wellness – Jr. & Sr. Emotional and physical well being, related to Student Body

Nebraska STAR Parliamentary Procedure Written Test Junior only
A test based on your knowledge of parliamentary procedure. Two from each district advance to state – no one advances to Nationals.

National STAR Foundational Events - These events, which build basic leadership and life skills, are for FCCLA members who want to get involved and improve upon themselves. Leadership Events - These events provide an opportunity for leaders to gain recognition for their work in their chapters. The event content is designed to be a chapter project led by the team who takes it to the competition. Career Preparation Events - These events are for students interested in a specific career area. Most events are for only senior and occupational participants who have spent time building career specific skills and knowledge, but a few are open to junior participants who want to explore a specific career path. Online Events - These have two participation levels. In Level 1, participants submit their online, digital project for evaluation. In Level 2, the twenty (2) highest scoring entries are invited to present their digital project, plus an oral presentation, at the National Leadership Conference. Divided into four categories:

National STAR Advocacy Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in each category 1-3 participants Demonstrate knowledge, skills, and ability to actively identify a local, state, or national concern, research the topic, identify a target audience and potential partnerships, form an action plan, and advocate for the issue in an effort to positively affect a policy or law. Prepare a portfolio and oral presentation no longer than 10 minutes.

National STAR Applied Math for Culinary Management
Sr. category only Two will advance to Nationals participants Use FACS skills to demonstrate the application of mathematical concepts in the culinary arts industry. File folder, Oral Presentation no longer than 5 minutes, and visuals. Participants take an applied math test and respond to a case study.

National STAR Career Investigation Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals from each category Individual event Perform self-assessments, research and explore a career, set career goals, create a plan for achieving goals and present information. Includes a portfolio and an oral presentation limited to 10 minutes

National STAR Chapter Service Project Jr. & Sr. categories in BOTH Display and Portfolio Two will advance to Nationals in all categories 1-3 participants Develop and implement an in-depth service project that makes a worthwhile contribution to families, schools and communities. Uses FACS skills to address and take action on a community need. Prepare a portfolio or display and an oral presentation no longer than 10 minutes.

National STAR Chapter in Review Jr. & Sr. categories in BOTH Display and Portfolio Two advance to Nationals in all categories 1-3 participants Recognizes chapters that develop and implement a well-balanced program of work and promotes FCCLA and FACS to the community. Prepare a portfolio or display and an oral presentation no longer than 15 minutes.

National STAR Entrepreneurship Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in both categories 1-3 participants Develop a plan for a small business using FACS skills and knowledge of sound business practices. The business must relate to FACS but does not actually have to be implemented. Presentation includes a portfolio, written business plan and oral presentation no longer than 20 minutes.

National STAR Environmental Ambassador Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in BOTH categories 1-3 participants Recognize an environmental issue that adversely impacts human health and well-being and actively empower others to get involved. Research one of the five current topics, investigate areas where you can make a difference, develop and carry out a stewardship project for your home, school, or community, and educate others about the problems, effects, and solutions. Portfolio and oral presentation up to 15 minutes.

National STAR Fashion Construction Sr. category only Two will advance to Nationals Individual event Apply Fashion Construction skills learned in FACS courses, and create a display using samples of their skills. Using new materials, construct in advance a garment that dresses both the upper and lower body of a child or adult. Must include at least eight fashion construction techniques. Display, sample garment, oral presentation no longer than 5 minutes.

National STAR Fashion Design Sr. category only Two will advance to Nationals Individual event Apply fashion design skills learned in FACS courses to design and market clothing styles. Develop a clothing label, research the intended audience, design the label’s first 6-piece collection, and construct one collection sample using an original flat pattern designed by you. Must show knowledge of all the aspects that surround design, including design basics, fabric choice, and pricing. Portfolio, sample garment, and oral presentation no longer than 10 minutes.

National STAR Focus on Children Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in BOTH categories 1-3 participants Uses FACS skills to plan and conduct a child development project that has a positive impact on children and the community. Presentation includes a display and oral presentation no longer than 10 minutes.

National STAR Food Innovations Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in BOTH categories 1-3 participants Demonstrate knowledge of the basic concepts of food product development by creating an original prototype formula, testing the product through focus groups, and developing a marketing strategy. Presentation includes up to a 15 minute oral speech, a display and product packaging prototype.

National STAR Hospitality, Tourism, and Recreation Sr. category only Two will advance to Nationals 1-3 participants Project must relate to culinary, lodging, recreation, tourism, or event coordination. Research existing businesses which are similar to their project, develop basic business plan and client services information and create a website that highlights the business. Demonstrate customer service knowledge and ability to problem solve through case study. Portfolio, oral presentation no longer than 10 minutes, and a case study.

National STAR Illustrated Talk Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in BOTH categories 1-3 participants Conduct research and make a presentation, using visuals, about issues concerning FACS. Presentation includes a file folder, visuals and oral presentation no longer than 10 minutes.

National STAR Interior Design Sr. category only Two will advance to Nationals 1-3 participants Create a floor plan, an elevation and a furniture/interior plan addressing the specifics of the design scenario. Presentation includes a file folder, visuals and up to 15 minute, and an oral presentation.

National STAR Interpersonal Communications Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in both categories 1-3 participants Use FACS skills to apply communication techniques developing a project designed to strengthen communication in a chosen category: community, employment, relationships, family, peer group, or school group. Presentation includes a file folder, no longer than 5 minute oral presentation and additional oral response to a case study up to 5 minutes.

National STAR Job Interview Sr. category only Two will advance to Nationals Individual event Use FACS skills to develop a portfolio, participate in an interview and communicate a personal understand of job requirements. Presentation includes a portfolio, completion of a job application and an interview limited to 20 minutes.

National STAR Leadership Sr. category only Two will advance to Nationals Individual event Actively evaluate and grow in their leadership potential. Participants use the Student Leadership Challenge and supporting materials, to investigate their leadership ability and develop a mentorship relationship to further their leadership development. Portfolio, Oral Presentation up to 10 minutes.

National STAR Life Event Planning Jr. and Sr. category Two will advance to Nationals in BOTH categories 1-3 participants Apply knowledge and skills gained from FACS consumer education or personal finance classes to manage the costs of an event. (Moving into the dorm at college, hosting a family reunion, taking a school or personal trip.) Prepare a portfolio and make an oral presentation no longer than 10 minutes.

National STAR National Programs In Action Jr. and Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in BOTH categories 1-3 participants An individual or team event, recognizes participants who explain how the planning process was used to plan and implement a national program project. Prepare a file folder, visuals, and make an oral presentation no longer than 10 minutes.

National STAR Nutrition and Wellness Jr. & Sr. categories Two advances to Nationals in BOTH categories Individual event Track food intake and physical activity for yourself, your family, or a community group and determine goals and strategies for improving overall health Portfolio and up to a 10 minute oral presentation.

National STAR Parliamentary Procedure Sr. category only Two teams will advance to Nationals 4-8 participants Develop a working knowledge of parliamentary law and demonstrate the ability to conduct an FCCLA business meeting. Presentation includes a test of knowledge, meeting demonstration, and prepare minutes no longer than 20 minutes in length.

National STAR Promote and Publicize Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in BOTH categories 1-3 participants Use communications skills and techniques to educate schools and communities about FCCLA with the intention of growing chapters and strengthening FACS and FCCLA programs Portfolio, writing sample, and up to a 10 minute oral presentation

National STAR Recycle and Redesign Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in BOTH categories Individual event Select a used fashion or home apparel item to recycle into a new product. Presentation includes a display and oral presentation not to exceed 10 minutes.

National STAR Sports Nutrition
Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in BOTH categories 1-3 participants Prepare a sample nutrition and hydration plan based upon nutritional and energy needs of the student athlete. Prepare a file folder and an oral presentation no longer than 15 minutes and demonstrate a method to be used by the athlete to assist with nutrition management

National STAR Teach and Train Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in BOTH categories Individual event Research a career in teaching, complete a shadowing experience and prepare a complete lesson plan. Presentation includes a portfolio, an oral presentation up to 10 minutes and a shadowing experience.

Online National STAR FCCLA Chapter Website Jr. OR Sr. High but not both Two will advance to Nationals 1-3 participants Use a chapter website to educate, inform, and involve members and the general public about the importance of the FACS program and the FCCLA chapter. Top 15 will be invited to present at Nationals. No district or state level competition.

Online National STAR Digital Stories For Change Jr. & Sr. categories Two will advance to Nationals in BOTH categories 1-3 participants Presentation includes a portfolio, an oral presentation up to 12 minutes maximum and a shadowing experience. Top 15 will be invited to present at Nationals. No district or state level competition.
