Circulatory Disorders & Diseases

The faster and stronger the heartbeat…. The higher the pressure
Blood Pressure A measure of the amount of force that the blood places on the walls of BV as it is pumped through the body. BP is highest in the arteries ( faster) BP is lowest in the veins (slower) The faster and stronger the heartbeat…. The higher the pressure
3
Blood Pressure 1st Reading: Systolic Pressure
Heart ventricles contracts to push blood into your arteries… maximum pressure 2nd Reading: Diastolic Pressure Heart ventricles relax to refill, BP is at its lowest. Systolic 110/70 120/80 Normal Diastolic
4
Nerve cells die w/o O2 supply.
ATHEROSCLEROSIS A condition where fatty material builds up on the inner walls of arteries & blocks the flow of blood. Nerve cells die w/o O2 supply.
5
CHOLESTEROL Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like material that is found in all parts of the body.
6
What Happens If The Blockage Is Not Treated?
1. Fatty material con’t to build up, & blood flow decreases. 2. Eventually, tissue nourished by the arteries DIES from inadequate blood supply.
7
Heart Attack The blood supply to part of the Heart is suddenly cut off, killing the muscle tissue in that area. Pg. 314
8
Hypertension Blood Pressure that remains too high for long periods of time. Caused By: Narrowing & Hardening of the Arteries The Heart must work harder to pump blood, which increases BP. Can do damage to Heart, BV, and organs. Artery walls weakened by high BP, rupture can occur. Blood leaks out of Artery, presses on nerve tissue, killing the cells.
9
Hereditary Risk Factors
Hypertension Hereditary Risk Factors Being Male Being of African Descent Close relatives with it Health Risk Factors Smoking Tobacco Not enough exercise Too much Sodium & Sat. fat > 2 alcoholic drinks daily Being overweight
10
Atherosclerosis & Hypertension can lead to a Stroke
A sudden disruption of blood supply to part of BRAIN, killing nerve tissue in that area. Atherosclerosis & Hypertension can lead to a Stroke
11
Effects Of A Stroke Depending of the area damaged many effects can occur. Paralysis of body parts. Loss of Speech or Understanding of Speech.
12
S *Ask the individual to SMILE. R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE Dr’s say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking 3 simple questions: S *Ask the individual to SMILE. T *Ask the person to TALK . to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. . . It is sunny out today) R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
13
Preventing Circulatory Diseases
Avoid Cigarette Smoking Eat a Healthy Diet Exercise Regularly Avoid Alcohol Avoid Being Overweight
14
Congenital Heart Defects
Open your textbook to Pg. 425 and research the vocab below… DEFINE, CAUSED BY, TREATMENT. Congenital Heart Defects Heart Murmur Varicose Veins Anemia Leukemia Hemophilia
15
Congenital Heart Defects
A condition that is present at birth. Septal Defect, Faulty Valves, or Aorta abnormally narrow CAUSED BY Many cases unknown Alcohol / Drugs during pregnancy Infections during pregnancy Heredity TREATMENT Medication & Surgery Pg 425
16
Abnormal sounds made as blood flows through heart.
Heart Murmur Abnormal sounds made as blood flows through heart. Caused by Problems within the heart Faulty Valves Treatment Slight one may disappear w/o treatment. More severe require surgery Pg 425
17
Varicose Veins Form when valves in veins don’t close tightly enough to prevent backflow of blood. Caused by Congenital defects Natural aging Treatment Physical Activity Reduce standing time Elevating legs when sleeping Surgery for removal Pg 425
18
Anemia Blood doesn’t have enough RBC or Hemoglobin to carry an adequate supply of O2. Caused by Dietary deficiencies (Iron) Low RBC # or Low Hemoglobin Inherited Pg 426
19
Leukemia Cancer in which any one of the different types of WBC is produced excessively & abnormally. Caused by ??? Treatment Childhood Leukemia often curable Adult Leukemia can go into remission Chemotherapy & Radiation Bone marrow transplants Pg 426
20
Hemophilia An inherited disorder where the blood doesn’t clot properly. Caused by Genetic make-up Treatment Injections that introduce the missing clotting factors into the blood. Factors can be extracted from blood donated by healthy individuals.
21
Mononucleosis Viral infection that causes abnormal increase in certain WBC. No Cure, body will cure itself
