1 Evolution of the Automobile
By: David Drahozal Cs 306

2 First Automobiles Karl Benz introduces first gasoline powerered automobile Features include a flywheel, pistons, hand brake, four stroke single cylinder engine, electric ignition, and water cooled engine No reverse Direction First internal combustion engine invented by Gottfried Dailmer Fuel is used by in engine to create a chemical reaction and powers the car

3 Mass Production of Automobiles
First car mass assembled in the United States was by Ransome Eli Old in Lansing, MI Started the assembly line idea and revolution of the Detroit motor Produced 425 low priced Curved Dash Oldsmobiles in 1901 Idea later perfected by Henry Ford and able to produce a car in 93 minutes

4 Powering the Automobile
Start using batteries to store energy in 1911 Lasted about a month and then had to be recharged and could be used again Manufacturers developed generators to store current and batteries didn’t have to be recharged every month Energy could be used as a self starter for the car as well as lights and horns 1912, General Motors created the first car with a self starter instead of crank shaft

5 Versatility of Automobiles
Four wheel drive and front wheel drive so cars could drive on any terrain Front wheel drive cars handle better in snow and rainy conditions because weight is up front so its easily controlled in bad weather First jeeps and land rovers are developed at governments request

6 Advancements in Cars Braking systems advanced a lot with more people driving Antilock brakes using hydraulics developed Heat and air conditioners were started becoming a necessity in the 1960’s Radial Tires are manufactured with volcanized rubber Studies show air bags and seat belts save lives Engine Control Units provide drivers with much needed information

7 Entertainment in Cars Record players add more entertainment than only radio GPS devices are created to give directions in 1990’s Driver assistance is available with companies such as OnStar Remote starters and key chains available TV’s in headrests and DVD players Adaptors to charge almost every eletronic device

8 Future of Automobiles Auto driving systems available
Flying cars a possibility Electric and much more fuel efficient technologies available Research on alternative fuels Endless amount of possibilities in the future
