1 Human Effects on Other Species.

2 Objectives. To know that the worlds’ population is increasing at a very rapid rate. To know that this will put a strain on the earths’ natural resources To see how this can affect other species, leading to endangered species and extinction. To consider possible conservation methods to protect endangered species.

3 How fast is the Human Population Increasing?
There are over 6 billion people on the earth today. How many more do you estimate there will be by the end of this lesson? Click for counter link

4 Human Population Expansion.
Year Billions of people 1900 1 1930 1.9 1940 2.0 1950 2.3 1960 3.0 1970 3.8 1980 4.5 1990 5.1 2000 6.0 20007 Use the number from counter Use the information to draw a graph of how human population has varied with time. Why do you think the population is increasing at such a rapid rate?

5 Problems for the Planet?
Task (in pairs) Predict the effect of increased world population on; Land Natural resources e.g water, minerals, food. Pollution Numbers of other animals.

6 Problems for British Animals
Human activities can lead to the total extinction or endangerment of entire species. The next slides show a few animals that use to live wild in Britain, but are now extinct in Britain. Try to guess why they became extinct.

7 European Beaver 1300 Hunted for fur Grey wolf 1700 Hunted and treated as vermin

8 Black tailed godwit 1885 Hunted for feathers and eggs Burbot 1972 Hunted and affected by pollution

9 These animals are endangered in Britain.
Endangered Species These animals are endangered in Britain. Scottish wild cat Hunted for fur. Habitat has been destroyed. Tends to mate with domestic cats Long-eared Owl – Habitat destroyed.

10 Marsh Fritillary Spiny seahorse. only feeds on one type of wild flower which is destroyed by farmers putting chemicals on their fields. Collected for sport. Gets caught in fishing nets and is affected by sea pollution

11 Common Skate Leather back turtle Gets caught in fishing nets and tends to choke on rubbish that it tries to eat- particularly plastic bags. Over fished and takes a long time to reach maturity

12 Conservation or Extinction
Some people think that if an animal cannot survive human activities it should be allowed to become extinct. Other people think that human beings have a duty to protect other animal species from our activities. What do you think? Write at least one paragraph for each of the arguments and suggest possible ways that we could conserve species if we wish to.

13 Population Increase. How much do you think the population has increased by during the course of this lesson? counter
