Describe various career paths/opportunities one might follow in the electrical trade. 3. Define the various sectors of the electrical industry. 4. State the tasks typically performed by an electrician. 5. Explain the responsibilities and aptitudes of an electrician. This is a knowledge-based module; there are no Performance Tasks. Orientation to the Electrical Trade

3 1.0.0 – 1.1.0 Residential Wiring Describe the components of a residential electrical system. Explain the difference between rough-in and trim-out. Orientation to the Electrical Trade

4 1.2.0 Commercial Wiring Describe commercial electrical installations. Point out that the wiring is typically installed in metal raceway systems. Orientation to the Electrical Trade

5 1.3.0 Industrial Wiring Describe some of the strict requirements for electrical installation in volatile environments. Discuss the duties of industrial electrician installers and maintenance personnel. Orientation to the Electrical Trade

6 Career Opportunities in the Electrical Field
2.0.0 – 2.2.0 Career Opportunities in the Electrical Field • Skilled electricians are in high demand to install, maintain, and troubleshoot electrical systems and equipment. • On-the-job learning (OJL) provides an opportunity to earn as you learn. • Many trainees begin by installing residential wiring. Point out that most of the activities in today’s society require electricity and electricians to install, maintain, and upgrade electrical systems. Explain that there is a high demand for skilled electricians. Discuss the benefits of on-the-job learning. Discuss employment opportunities for residential electricians. Orientation to the Electrical Trade

7 Commercial Electrician
2.3.0 Commercial Electrician • Commercial electricians install wiring in apartment buildings, stores, offices, service stations, and hospitals. • Commercial buildings are typically metal-frame construction. Describe the duties of commercial electricians and where they are employed. Orientation to the Electrical Trade

8 Industrial Electrician
2.4.0 Industrial Electrician • Industrial electricians may require additional training in three-phase power, motors, motor control systems, and instrumentation. • Industrial electricians may also work in hazardous locations. Explain that industrial electricians require additional training to install specialty equipment in hazardous locations. Orientation to the Electrical Trade

9 Electrical Maintenance Technician
2.5.0 Electrical Maintenance Technician • Electrical maintenance technicians are typically employed by large facilities to service the electrical and instrumentation systems. • Electrical maintenance personnel service and repair equipment such as magnetic motor starters. Describe the duties of electrical maintenance technicians and explain where they are employed. Explain that both in-house and contractor positions are available for electrical maintenance technicians. Explain that industrial maintenance electricians should become familiar with magnetic motor starters. Orientation to the Electrical Trade

10 3.0.0 – 3.1.3 Your Training Program
• An electrical apprenticeship typically requires four years of training, including 576 classroom hours and 8,000 hours of OJL. • NCCER training is competency-based, which means that the trainee must demonstrate the skills presented in each module of training. • A record of each trainee’s progress is maintained in a National Registry. Describe the minimum standards for apprenticeship programs. Explain that the NCCER program provides both classroom instruction and OJL. Explain the general requirements for apprenticeship programs. Describe the youth apprenticeship program. Discuss the benefits and responsibilities of becoming a licensed electrician. Orientation to the Electrical Trade

11 Employee/Employer Responsibilities
4.0.0 – 5.0.0 Employee/Employer Responsibilities • Professionals are honest and dependable. They take responsibility for their mistakes and are willing to learn from them. • Employers must provide and maintain a safe workplace. Orientation to the Electrical Trade

12 6.0.0 Safety Employees must follow all rules for working procedures/practices, report any unsafe equipment and conditions, and wear all appropriate PPE. Explain how employees can help to maintain a safe working environment. Emphasize the importance of reporting unsafe conditions. Discuss the importance of the NEC® and NFPA 70E® standards. Provide copies of the latest editions for trainees to examine. Orientation to the Electrical Trade

13 Wrap Up 3-2-1 3 – Write 3 important things learned during class
2 – Write 2 questions you have about the material 1 – Write 1 thought you had about the material Use the questions shown on the Wrap Up slide of the presentation to generate discussion of this session's content. Orientation to the Electrical Trade

14 Next Session… MODULE EXAM
Review the complete module to prepare for the module exam. Complete the Module Review as a study aid. Have the trainees complete the Review Questions, Supplemental Exercises, and Trade Terms Quiz, and go over the answers prior to administering the Module Examination.
