Remember! Bring your TIG sheets to next lesson!

2 The Fall of the Wall & the Reunification of Germany
Lesson Objectives To know the timeline of events up to the fall of the Wall. To understand the role played by Helmut Kohl in the reunification process

3 OSTPOLITIK Can you remember this from your previous lesson? What does it mean? How successful had it been between in 1960s and 1980s?

4 The Wall comes down In the late 1980s a series of radical political changes took place in some Eastern Bloc countries (Poland & Hungary), allowing their citizens greater freedoms. In August 1989 Hungary opened its border with Austria. During September 1989 more than 13,000 East Germans travelled to the open border and crossed into Austria and the West. To stop this the East German Government ordered the Hungarians to stop more East Germans crossing the border. At the same time the East German Government stopped all travel between East Germany and Hungary. Use Ben Walsh p146 for notes.

5 Watch the Clip What can you find out about the events of 9th November 1989? Use Ben Walsh p146 to create a timeline of the fall of the Wall

6 Now that the wall is down…
what problems are now going to face Germany? Should they unite or stay as two separate countries? If they unite what problems would they face? Cultural & Economic Differences Political Differences International Allies

7 Helmut Kohl & Reunification Read the Helmut Kohl Sheet and summarise:
1) Role of Helmut Kohl 2) Reasons for Unification 3) Impact on ordinary people Supplement with p229 of orange book

8 Interesting Side note….
During 1989 the best selling song in Germany was “I’m looking for Freedom” by David Hasselhoff. On new year’s eve, 7 weeks after the fall of the Berlin wall, Hasselhoff performed a concert next to the Brandenburg Gate and the remains of the Wall. He has subsequently claimed that it was the success of this concert that convinced Germans that they should be united.
