3. Intent of English 9 Honors
Prepare students to listen more carefully and follow directions thoroughly
Prepare students for English 10 Honors (exponentially more difficult than English 9 Honors)
Prepare students for higher level thinking and critical analysis
Push students to perform at higher levels
Prepare students for college

4. Texts Holt Literature and Language Arts
(Third Course)
Holt Handbook (in class text only)
Various novels, including Animal
Farm by George Orwell and Night by
Elie Wiesel

5. Materials Needed for Class
3-ring binder with filler/notebook paper
2 spiral notebooks
3x5 index cards
2 or more standard blue or black pens
Please note: All work must be completed in standard blue or black ink, except for Scantrons and drawings.

6. Class Format Most reading is done on own as homework.
Most writing is done in class, though not exclusively.
Weekly vocabulary and grammar work are started in class but often need to be finished at home.
Computerized vocabulary in near future will require 10 minutes each night on the computer.

7. Make-up Work
May sometimes be an alternative assignment – posted on moodle
Two days grace per day absent – if Verified absence (Work may not be made up when student is suspended.)
Tests and quizzes must be made up within one week of the absence. Students need to make appointment to do so.
NQAs allow students to turn in homework/classwork 1 day late with no penalty. (May not be used on major projects/writing assignments)
