Covalent Bonds

Sharing is Caring!  Covalent bonds are the chemical bond formed when 2 atoms SHARE electrons Covalent bonds occur between two nonmetal atoms—why do you think this is so?

Let’s get together! By sharing 2 electrons in a covalent bond, each fluorine atom gains a stable set of 8 valence electrons. Which are the shared electrons that form a covalent bond between the 2 fluorine atoms?

Single Bonds… Occur when atoms in a molecule share 1 pair of electrons.

Single Bonds… Single bonds are written by showing how there is only one pair being shared among the atoms.

More Single Bonds… Methane Gas CH4

Double Bonds… Occur when atoms in a molecule share 2 pairs of electrons.

More Double Bonds…

Triple Bonds… Occur when atoms in a molecule share 3 pairs of electrons.
