National History Day 2018 Conflict & Compromise
2
What is National History Day?
A research project in which you chose the topic that you think best reflects the theme and has historical impact You make an argumentative thesis statement - Lyndon Johnson was the most impactful American president – and then you provide research that helps you PROVE that statement. That’s called Textual Evidence. You then present that thesis statement and textual evidence in a web site, a paper, a documentary, a dramatic performance or a display board. The steps: chose a topic, research, argue, prove, present The boundaries: connect to the theme, historical impact, argumentative thesis statement, textual evidence
3
Your first task is to pick a topic!
It has to fit the theme, be historically impactful, have enough source material/textual evidence (especially primary source material) and interest you. What is primary source material? A Primary source is also called original source or original textual evidence. It is an artifact, a document, a recording, photograph, painting, diary, letter, transcript or other source of information that was created at the time under study.
4
Conflict & Compromise With a partner, make a t-chart on paper with the words conflict & compromise. Make a list of words that you would use to describe what conflict & compromise are. You have 1 minute.
5
Now… Compare your list with a neighboring group
Between both groups, circle the three words you think best describe conflict and the three words that best describe compromise. You have 1 minute!
6
Since the theme is “Conflict & Compromise” you might have thought about people, groups, countries that had conflict. Is the conflict over? Do we have enough time/distance from the event to understand its significance and short and long term effects? . Think about any time in history when people had conflict. War, border disagreements, political decisions. That’s probably a good place to find people having conflict and compromise that is historically important. Compromises can be FAILED ones as well. Turn to your table neighbor and think of some examples of conflict with historical significance. List them on your t chart.
7
Did you think of any of these examples?
WWI WWII Vietnam War Korean War Native Americans and US expansion/Treaties/reservations Partitioning of Palestine/Israel Partitioning of India/Pakistan Partitioning of Berlin Chamberlain Appeasement Gandhi Salt March Panama Canal Suez Canal Boxer Protocol Apartheid Galileo & the Vatican Indus Water Treaty The breakup of Yugoslavia Crusades Roman triumvirate Magna Carta Constitutional Convention Moon Treaty Civil Rights Labor Strikes/Rights Women’s Suffrage
8
A good NHD project will:
Use primary sources Use a variety and depth of sources (newspapers, articles, pictures, diaries, letters, journals, books, maps, graphs, interviews, etc.) Place topic in historical context/explain the background Be historically accurate Balanced (POV, interpretations, perspectives) Show analysis and interpretation *
9
What does it mean to show analysis and interpretation?
This is the hardest part and the most important part. When you take two or more pieces of information and make your own conclusion about that information, you have shown analysis. Consider this data: Highly educated households spend much more money on the local economy versus their less educated peers. An analysis statement based on that data: Cities with universities will have different demographics than similarly sized cities. More of the citizens will be educated and earning more then the non-university comparable city. The cost of housing will be higher. A greater variety of stores will be flourishing in the university city. When people spend money in the community it provides jobs. A person with a four year degree adds almost $300,000 more to the local economy than a person without a college degree. The cities with universities have people with higher education levels. Higher income earners tend to live in areas with higher property taxes and home values.
