A COURSE IN SPOKEN ENGLISH
LESSON This is the second of five lessons on intonation in English speech. The First of these lessons was principally concerned with locating the nucleus in short utterances. Each nucleus had either a falling or a rising tone. This second lesson gives practice in using both the falling and the rising tones and in distinguishing between them. First the falling tone. You will hear words containing a nucleus with a falling tone and you will then hear these words fitted into longer utterances. Listen carefully

Be sure to place the nucleus on the same syllable as the speaker, and be sure to use a falling tone. You will hear each word and sentence twice. Then you should repeat it once.

The nucleus in each of the foregoing examples had a falling tone. Here are some words and sentences having a nucleus with a rising tone. Listen carefully. Ho,tel Do you ‘know a ‘good ho,tel, here? ;worry I ‘shouldn’t, worry a,bout it. ,school ‘Has your ‘son’ started, school, yet? Now repeat the words and sentences as before. Do you ‘know a ‘good ho,tel, here? (twice)

The next exercise contains both falling and raising tones. You will be told which tone is to be used. Then you will hear a sentence twice, and you repeat it once. Falling tone: ‘What are you ‘gong to’ do? Rising tone: I just ‘hope I’m not inter, rupting. Falling tone: It’s ‘not as late as I ‘though. Rising tone: I ‘could come’ back to, night Falling tone: ‘Leave him a’lone for a, minute. Rising tone: ‘Will you get the, car out, Falling tone: ‘Where are the ‘stamps you bought? Rising tone: D’you, have to be, there at, ten? Falling tone: The ‘books have been ‘taken a’way. Rising tone: Will, that do for the, time, being?
