The County Unit System Set up in 1917 to give more power to rural areas and less to urban ones The state split up power to counties based on what was known as unit votes Urban-6 votes, Town- 4, rural- 2 Ended up with 48 urban votes, 120 town votes and 242 rural votes This took power away from Black citizens who moved to the cities which were much more densely populated This system lasted for 50 years

Jim Crow Buildup White Politicians have been trying to remove voting power and rights from Black citizens Jim Crow was named after a ministerial show character Jim Crow laws were used to take away the progress of black citizens after the 14th and 15th amendments Used to remove voting rights and took away equality between the blacks and whites

Plessy vs. Ferguson June 1892 Homer Plessy was arrested for sitting in the Whites only section in the railcar This protest was set up by a group of well off blacks who wanted to test Louisiana’s segregation laws When the ruling went to court, Plessy lost causing the idea of “separate but equal” The supreme court decided that the 14th amendment gives political rights but not social rights

Jim crow Effects Jim Crow became the legal segregation of blacks and whites in the country (the south) It became unlawful to use the same schools, bathrooms, stores and even intermarry in certain states Over 480 black men were lynched in Georgia in the fifty years under Jim Crow Describe the one you think is the worst
