B, Apple-green birefringence under polarization (arrow) on Congo red stain confirms that the material in the islet is amyloid. C, Due to loss of sensation secondary to peripheral neuropathy and poor circulation due to vascular damage, diabetics are prone to develop nonhealing ulcers (arrow) of the extremities.
