The University of Rijeka is the most important higher education institution in the western part of Croatia, founded in 1973.
Presently, the University of Rijeka consists of: eleven faculties (Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Philosophy, Rijeka, Faculty of Maritime Studies, Teachers’ faculty, Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Opatija, Faculty of Economics and Tourism "Dr. Mijo Mirković", Pula, Faculty of Philosophy, Pula); one teachers' schools of professional higher education in Pula, the Academy of Applied Arts, two university libraries (in Rijeka and Pula) and a Students' Centre.
The total number of students at the University of Rijeka in the academic year 2005/06 is 18,977. Of this number, are full-time students and 5,275 part-time students. There are also 47 foreign students at the University.
The University employs 997 full-time teachers and non-academic staff of 616.
About 60% of the total income is financed by the Ministry, 38% comes from the University’s own activities (mainly fees) and 2% of the income comes from other sources.
The University members are engaged in 123 national and international projects.
