1 Metric Measurements

2 It is important that measurements be accurate & easily communicated to other people

3 The scientific system of measurement is called the metric system

4 Scientists Use metric Units to measure length, volume, mass, weight, density, & temperature.

5 Length: the basic unit of length in the metric system is the
meter.

6 To measure the length of an object smaller than a meter,
use the metric unit called a centimeter.

7 There are 100 centimeters in a meter.

8 To measure objects smaller than a centimeter, the millimeter is used.

9 There are 1000 millimeters in a meter.

10 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters
Measuring Length 1 centimeter = 10 millimeters How many millimeters are in 1 centimeter? What is the length of the line in centimeters? _______cm What is the length of the line in millimeters? _______mm What is the length of the line to the nearest centimeter? ________cm HINT: Round to the nearest centimeter – no decimals.

11

12 What is the length of your paper? _______
The width? __________ Your pinkie finger? _______________ Your length and width of your science notebook? _______ _______ 4. From your elbow to your wrist? ________

13 For larger measurements,
of distance, scientists use the kilometer.

14 There are 1000 meters in a kilometer

15 To measure distances in space, astronomer use a unit of distance called the light year.

16 A light year is the distance light travels in a year.

17 A light year Is about 9.5 trillion (9,500,000,000,000,000) Kilometers.

18 Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.
So remember, in science, volume is how much space something takes up, NOT how loud your music is Volume is the amount of space an object takes up.

19 In the metric system, the basic unit of volume is the liter.

20 To measure volumes smaller than a liter, scientists use the milliliter.

21 Liters and milliliters
are used to measure the volume of liquids.

22 English vs. Metric Units
Which is larger? A. 1 liter or 1 gallon B. 1 liter or 1 quart C. 1 milliliter or 1 fluid ounce 1 fl oz = ml 1 12-oz can of soda would equal approximately 355 ml. 1 gallon = 3.79 liters It would take approximately 3 ¾ 1-liter bottles to equal a gallon. 1 quart = liters

23 Measuring Volume of liquids & Irregular Objects
We use graduated cylinders to find the volume of liquids and other objects.

24 What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL
Read the measurement based on the bottom of the meniscus or curve. When using a real cylinder, make sure you are eye-level with the level of the water. What is the volume of water in the cylinder? _____mL

25 What causes the meniscus?
A meniscus occurs when the molecules of the liquid attract those of the container. The glass attracts the water on the sides.

26 Measuring Liquid Volume
What is the volume of water in each cylinder? Images created at A B C Pay attention to the scales for each cylinder.

We can measure the volume of irregular object using water displacement. Amount of H2O with object = ______ About of H2O without object = ______ Subtract for Volume = ______

28 The metric unit used to measure the volume of solids is called the cubic centimeter.

29 Measuring Solid Volume
We can measure the volume of regular object using the formula length x width x height. 10 cm 9 cm 8 cm _____ X _____ X _____ = _____

30 Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object.

31 The basic unit of mass in the metric system is the gram.

32 To measure the mass of large objects, the kilogram is used.

33 A kilogram is 1000 grams.

34 English vs. Metric Units
1 pound = grams Which is larger? 1. 1 Pound or 100 Grams 2. 1 Kilogram or 1 Pound 3. 1 Ounce or 1000 Milligrams 100 kilogram = 220 pounds 1 ounce of gold = 28,349.5 milligrams

35 Measuring Mass We will be using triple-beam balances to find the mass of various objects. The objects are placed on the scale and then you move the weights on the beams until you get the lines on the right-side of the scale to match up.

36 What would be the mass of the object measured in the picture?
Once you have balanced the scale, you add up the amounts on each beam to find the total mass. What would be the mass of the object measured in the picture? ___ + ___ + ___ = ___ g
