“Solving Marlborough’s Demographic Challenges”
WHY THE TITLE? “Solving Marlborough’s Demographic Challenges”
3
Solving Marlborough’s Demographic Challenges
Everything we have always assumed about labour markets supply and demand is redundant, broken, disrupted. A combination of economic growth, an aging population and concentration of the population in major urban centres has left the regions in a perilous position. The market can no longer provide a solution – AT LEAST NOT FOR A SMALL REGION LIKE Marlborough (or Nelson or Tasman)

Solving Marlborough’s Demographic Challenges
2,500 Our forecast population “growth” (Statistics New Zealand). Changes to 2030. We already have the oldest average age and the fastest aging population in New Zealand.

Solving Marlborough’s Demographic Challenges
3,700 #1 The number of additional employees MBIE predict Marlborough will need by the June 2020 to Ride the wave of opportunity” Stuart Smith of those are beyond the wine industry. Important therefore that we avoid internal competition.

Solving Marlborough’s Demographic Challenges
If we do not intervene proactively, aggressively and urgently, we WILL miss the “wave of opportunity” (Stuart Smith) This may be our one opportunity to nudge the trajectory of our demographics into a more positive future. Not many places are presented with that opportunity. We do not have a choice!

INTENSE COMPETITION FOR TALENT.
Solving Marlborough’s Demographic Challenges This is not just a wine industry problem – It’s also a MARLBOROUGH PROBLEM And a NEW ZEALAND PROBLEM And a DEVELOPED WORLD PROBLEM So we are in INTENSE COMPETITION FOR TALENT. We have the opportunity, possibly the imperative, to LEAD.

Solving Marlborough’s Demographic Challenges
The challenges that we face include: The highest population mobility in the country. Aging at one end, departure at the other. ANONYMINITY as a migrant destination. Perform poorly at attracting international migrants. Seasonal workforce not included in statistics. Already have critical shortages - professionals, trades, labourers. Not have enough houses to accommodate the growth (Rental or to buy). We have a lot of advantages in our favour too – if we can recognise and exploit them.

Solving Marlborough’s Demographic Challenges
The things we must do include: Find leadership - MCOC & MBIE have shown the way. Raise awareness and understanding. Comprehensively connect, coordinate & collaborate. Aggressively promote the region as a migrant destination – URGENTLY - NOW. Build and promote a central “We have Jobs” - job register – many have given up trying to recruit. Confront the accommodation issue as a priority. Optimise the utilisation and retention of those we already have – youth, senior, cross cultural (Part 2).
