1 Going Paperless: Using Google Forms to Improve Academic Vocabulary
By: MaryLynn Patton, Ed.D. ESOL Faculty El Centro College

2 Why read outside the classroom?
Extensive reading outside the classroom is vital to vocabulary building in context (Brown & Lee, 2015). Not only does it build reading comprehension (Chang & Millett, 2017), but it also increases learner motivation (Anderson, 2014; Filice & Sturino, 2002). This increase in reading comprehension is often associated with learners’ knowledge of academic vocabulary (Sibold, 2011).

3 Why read outside the classroom?
This lesson focuses on vocabulary and summary development in areas familiar to the students (Chang & Millett, 2017) allowing the learners to advance their skills beyond readings that regularly occur in the classroom (Brown & Lee, 2015; Grabe & Stoller, 2001).

4 Why add technology? Incorporating technology into lessons is a great way to maintain engagement and increase students’ technology skills (Kern, 2006).

5 Tracking the submissions via google forms is a great way to incorporate technology into the class in a meaningful way.

6 This demonstration will focus on using google forms within a lesson for a reading development class while using extensive reading.

7 Design of Demonstration
I will explain how to use google forms within a comprehensive lesson to help learners improve their reading/vocabulary comprehension You will practice creating using the google form both as a teacher and a student I will share feedback and technology tips from the teacher and student perspective.

8 The lesson Read an article (newspaper or peer-reviewed) outside of class. Each student finds their own depending on their area of interest Complete for a submission: One paragraph summary of the article One paragraph reaction to the article 5 new vocabulary words Present ONE of the articles (summary and reaction) to the class focusing on oral summary phrases
