1
Characteristics of Living Things
Cells
2
What we used to believe…
Spontaneous Generation- believed in the 1600’s that life came from non-living matter. Mice from hay Frogs and turtles from the mud at the bottom of ponds Rotten meat turning into maggots

Francesso Redi disproved this theory. All Living Things…
Francesso Redi disproved this theory. All Living Things… * have CELLS (and DNA) *SENSE & RESPOND to change *REPRODUCE (sexually- 2 parents; asexually-1 parent) *use ENERGY *GROW and DEVELOP *have the ability to MOVE *exchange gases *excrete wastes
4
The Bare Necessities of Life
1. Organisms must have FOOD. *producers -make their own food *consumers -eat other organisms *decomposers- -break down the nutrients in dead organisms and animal wastes. 2. Organisms depend on WATER. 3. Organisms need AIR.
5
3. Organisms need AIR. oxygen to release the energy in food
3. Organisms need AIR. *oxygen to release the energy in food. *plants, algae, and some bacteria use carbon dioxide. 4. Organisms must have a place to live where they can get the things they need. Homeostasis- maintaining a stable internal environment * sweat: to cool off *shiver: to warm up
6
Atoms, Elements, and Molecules
Make up everything living and non-living Tiny particles that make up all matter. Element A substance made up of one type of atom Molecule When two or more atoms join together
7
ELEMENTS: C – carbon O – oxygen H – hydrogen
MOLECULES: H2O water O2 oxygen CO carbon dioxide C6H12O6 glucose

Dr. Birdley Glue in the Dr. Birdley Levels of Organization Comic Strips on the next page of your lab book.
9
Levels of Organization
Living Cells the smallest unit of life Tissues a group of similar cells that perform a common function Organs made of tissues and serves a specific function
10
Organ Systems (or just Systems)
A group of organs that work together to perform body functions Organism a living thing; anything that can carry out life processes independently
11
Non-Living Organelles Molecules Atoms cell parts with specific jobs
When two or more atoms combine to form a new substance Atoms What everything living and non living is made of; smallest unit of matter
