The Moon Phases change in a regular pattern.
So, what is that pattern? Good question!

It takes the Moon 29.5 days to revolve around the Earth once.
From New Moon to Full Moon takes about 14 days. From Full Moon to New Moon takes another 14 days.

We’ll start with the New Moon.
We cannot see the New Moon. The entire surface of the Moon facing the Earth is in darkness.

The Moon is between the Earth and the Sun.

After New Moon, the Moon appears to be getting larger!

The Moon revolves around the Earth.
We see different amounts of the Moon’s surface in sunlight.

Look at this diagram.

We only see the part of the Moon’s surface in sunlight.

In position #1, we see a crescent Moon.

In position #2, we see a half Moon.

In position #3, we see a Moon larger than half, but not full.

In position #4, we see the Full Moon.

The pattern we see is the Moon appears to be getting larger.

The sunlit side is on the right-hand side of the Moon.

After Full Moon, this pattern changes.

The Moon appears to be getting smaller.

The sunlit side is on the left-hand side.

In position #5, we see a Moon larger than half, but not full.

In position #6, we see a half-Moon (sunlight side on the left).

In position #7, we see a crescent Moon.

And we start all over with the New Moon.

And the pattern continues month after month.
