1 The Large Hadron Collider
Will it create a black hole? By: Luke Troyon Raylin Thompson

2 What is The Large Hadron Collider?
Particle accelerator and “atom smasher” Located between France and The Alpines Most expensive scientific instrument Worlds largest scientific tool

3 How does it work? Magnetism Multi loop system Opposite directions
constant pulsating Multi loop system Opposite directions Crossing points

4 What is its purpose? Quantum physics - string theory
‘The God Particle’ Discovering new particles Big bang theory How everything was created

5 How strange are Strangelets?
Also known as Strange Matter Believed to play role in creation of Black Holes Surface tension is much greater then standard particle; matter pressured into it instead of towards it LHC scientists state they are hypothetical-too unstable, decay instantly

6 Black Holes? Regions where matter collapses into a point of infinite density Einstein’s Theory of Relativity states impossibility of production through LHC Basic theory-decays rapidly Hypothetically stable can be shown to be harmless through study of cosmic rays

7 Safety of Microscopic Black Holes?
Determined if electrically charged or neutral Stable-expected electrically charged since created by charged particles; interact with ordinary matter and be stopped while traversing Earth Neutral-any interactions with Earth would be weak

8 Magnetic Monopoles? Particle that holds a single magnetic charge, whether north or south, instead of two Could pull matter apart with their lopsided poles Could cause protons to decay Too heavy to be produced by LHC?

9 Could the LHC create a Black Hole?
While theories speculate it could be possible, such an outcome is highly unlikely Any potential black hole dissipate and decay before being able to absorb matter
