ELIXIR Safeguarding the results of life science research in Europe

2
ELIXIR underpins life science research – across academia and industry
ELIXIR connects national bioinformatics centres and EMBL-EBI into a sustainable European infrastructure for biological research data medicine agriculture bioindustries ELIXIR underpins life science research – across academia and industry environment
3
A distributed infrastructure to scale with the challenges
ELIXIR infrastructure for Europe’s life science research sector ELIXIR Nodes build local bioinformatics capacity throughout Europe ELIXIR Nodes build on national strengths and priorities Biology has by far the largest research community: ~500,000 life science researchers in Europe >8 million web hits a day at EBI alone Creating a robust infrastructure for biological information is a bigger task than any individual organisation or nation can take on alone These are issues of such complexity that no single institution or country can tackle alone At the global level interactions with: RDA NIH BD2K GA4GH
4
ELIXIR Infrastructure
Data Sustain core data resources Tools Services & connectors to drive access and exploitation Compute Access, Exchange & Compute on sensitive data Interoperability Integration and interoperability of data and services through standards. Training Professional skills for managing and exploiting data 5 platforms

ELIXIR- ELIXIR prioritised by ESFRI in for implementation and operation support: €19 million 4 year project, 41 partners in 15 countries starts September 2015 Accelerate the implementation of ELIXIR across Nodes Develop and connect resources and services (from Nodes) Build bioinformatics capacity across Europe Five platforms: Data; Tools; Compute; Interoperability; Training Four Use Cases: Rare diseases; Human data; Plant genotype- phenotype; Marine metagenomics
7
EXCELERATE consortium
41 partners 15 countries

EXCELLERATE Structure
9
Resource management and governance principles of data and tools
Data integration through a federated approach Scalable access and analysis of research data Role of communities developing around research data, computing and tools Actions to develop a culture of sharing and participation
10
EXCELERATE The success of ELIXIR service implementation is measured by and dependent on the advances reached in the scientific use cases and training. Use existing European e-Infrastructure resources to support the implementation of use cases and training. E.g. EGI federated cloud A particular challenge how to enable access, processing and transfer of human data. Working with Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH) Framework for Responsible Sharing of Genomic and Health-Related Data
