1 September 6, 2011 By the end of today: I will know how to write equations and inequalities from a given word problem and turn a word problem into an equation/inequality. Have your composition notebook on your desk open to your homework.

2 9/2 Homework: Worksheet 1.) 6n – 4
7.) Two less than 3 times a number k 2.) 5/y 8.) Four times the sum of m and six 3.) 4(4 – t) 9.) Eight more than one third of a number a 4.) 3(7 + k) 10.) Six more than twice a number c 5.) 4k – 1 11.) 9x7y2z – nine times x to the seventh power times y squared times z 6.) x2 + y3

3 Words That Mean… Equals Less than Greater than Less than or equal to
Greater than or equal to

4 Be Very Careful! What does “5 less than 10” mean?
What does “5 is less than 10” mean? That word “is” IS important!

5 Expression, Equation, or Inequality?
An equation always has an equal sign. An inequality always has a <, >, <, > sign. An expression has NO symbol.

6 Write the Equation or Inequality
The difference of twice a number k and 8 is 12 The product of 6 and a number n is less than 24 6 less than x is 10

7 Write the Equation or Inequality
The sum of 42 and a number n is equal to 51 The product of 8 and a number k is greater than 4 The product of 9 and the quantity 5 more than a number t is less than 6

8 Write the Verbal Rule x + 8 = 13 15 – 4y > 6 3(f – 6) = 4

9 Homework page 24 (2 – 8, 12) Quiz next time!
