Climate change impacts on vulnerable mountain regions The impacts of climate change on physical, biological and socio-economic systems of mountain regions should be quantified from time periods covering next decades to a century including field campaigns and modelling studies. Emphasis should be given to water and energy supply, melting of glaciers, tourism, forestry and agricultural production, and services from semi-natural and natural (pristine) ecosystems. Research should also address the resulting social and economic impacts. Focus should be on regions with particularly high vulnerability in Europe and worldwide. Participation of international partner countries is encouraged. Funding scheme: collaborative projects (large-scale integrating projects) Environment provisional WP

Past and future climate change impacts in the Parana-Plata river basin of South America Observations and modelling studies at both regional and continental scale to quantify past and predict future climate changes and impacts in the Parana-Plata basin. Emphasis in climate change impacts should be given to floods, hydrological systems, land-use and agriculture, deforestation and needs to assess the social and economic implications. Adaptation measures to future climate risks and impacts should be also considered. Impacts and feed-backs of climate policies on land use and ecosystems in Europe. Research should assess the impacts of climate (and other sectoral) policies on land use and ecosystems and the resulting feed-back on the climate system. Regional climate models should be coupled with land use models to improve the representation of explicit biophysical and economic mitigation and adaptation strategies in agriculture and forestry. … Funding scheme: collaborative projects (small or medium-scale focused research projects) Expected impact: Assessment of the efficiency of current and future land use adaptation and mitigation processes, including carbon sinks and biomass/-fuel production. Identification of the adaptation induced by policies, in particular by the Common Agricultural Policy, Rural development Strategy, EU Forestry Strategy and Forest Action Plan, and in general EU policies on climate change. Management of Resources Sub activity 6.2.1 : Conservation and sustainable management of natural and man-made resources ENV.2007.2.1.4.1. Contribution of biodiversity to ecosystem services Understanding how biological diversity terrestrial, inland waters and marine - at European and international levels - contributes to ecosystem goods and services and to livelihoods … Major economic sectors depending/impacting on biodiversity have to be considered (agriculture, forestry, fisheries, transport, trade, tourism, industry). Funding scheme: collaborative projects (small or medium-scale focused research projects) Expected impact: Better quantification of the cost of loosing biodiversity, e.g. in terms of products and services, use and non-use values, and ultimately in terms of reduced productivity and welfare…. Management of Resources Sub activity 6.2.1 : Conservation and sustainable management of natural and man-made resources ENV.2007.2.1.4.2. Use of natural resources: the impact on biodiversity, ecosystem goods and services Improve understanding of how the use of and trade in natural resources at European and international levels affects biodiversity (marine, inland waters and terrestrial), ecosystem goods and services and the resilience and resistance of ecological-economic systems, and develop or improve methods to measure and value biodiversity and ecosystem resilience and detect when ecosystems are approaching the limits of their natural functioning or productive capacity. Establish and improve mechanisms and methods to determine the sustainability of various intensities of use of components of biodiversity and of ecosystems. © Euresearch Julian Randall January 2007 FP7 – Environment www.euresearch.ch 12 Activity 6.3: Environmental Technologies Sub-activity 6.3.1 Environmental technologies for observation, simulation, prevention, mitigation, adaptation, remediation and restoration of the natural and man-made environment ENV.2007.3.1.5.1. Low resource consumption buildings and infrastructure This coordination activity aims at promoting and facilitating the uptake of new or improved technologies for the built environment which reduce the life-cycle environmental impact associated to the use of multiple, natural and non- renewable resources (water, primary raw materials, energy, land) and the generation of waste. The reduction of use of hazardous substances in the building sector is also to be considered. Analysis of case-studies across Europe, pre-normative research, standards, training needs, directives and regulatory framework, and policy recommendations should be considered together with non- technical barriers to the uptake of environmental technologies … Funding scheme: coordination and support actions (coordinating type) Environment provisional WP

COSIN-JRC (Community Spatial Information Infrastructure): Standardisation and harmonisation are fundamental to improve access and the integrated use of Community information resources and services through the development of a Community Spatial Data Infrastructure. The extensive experience of the JRC with the production and use of geo-referenced data in the field of environment and natural resources is here put to work to support the application of INSPIRE principles across the JRC spectrum of relevant activities (soils, water, forestry, agriculture and other aspects of environment and natural resources). ITraS (Identification and Traceability of GMOs and systems biology) The objective of this action is to conduct research, development, training and competence-building activities for the harmonised implementation of GMO legislation. The Action involves : -research and development in areas related to the assessment of GMOs, -reference analytes and their use as control samples -stability studies and the molecular characterisation of selected GMOs -further develop its biometrics competences -develop a systems biology approach -It will also continue theoretical and laboratory training in GMO analysis. Application is foreseen in various fields relevant for agriculture, forestry and fisheries, environmental protection, wildlife trade, human and animal health and consumer protection. AGRITECH (New Technologies in Agriculture - their agronomic and socio-economic impact): This action will support policies affected by the introduction into agriculture, forestry and aquaculture of new technologies, analysing their potential socio-economic impacts and the possible policy needs. In the first years the action will concentrate on biotechnology applications (GM crops and plants/animals, but also advanced non- GM techniques), in particular the measures aimed at ensuring co- existence between GM and non GM crops, and on supporting the development of legislative initiatives concerning the production of GM and non GM seeds in Europe. Support in this connection will be based on agronomic feasibility studies, economic impact analyses of the proposed measures and the elaboration of consensus documents. Forest in JRC (2007-2013)

FOREST (Forest Data and information systems) The Action deals with the flow of policy relevant forest information Set up European Forest Data Centre (EFDAC) as the single forest information focal point for all relevant EU policies and initiatives, and as the basis of the European Forest Monitoring System proposed in EU Forest Action Plan FOREST will consolidate the forest information systems existing or under development at the JRC (the European Forest Fire Information System, the Forest Focus Data Platform and the European Forest Information and Communication Platform) Advanced modelling techniques.. to provide the information needed to understand the status and trends of European forests (species distribution, forest area, and biomass), the interactions between forests and biodiversity, those between forests and climate change and the protective function of forests. GHG - AFOLU (Greenhouse Gases in Agriculture, Forestry and other Land Uses) A holistic approach of agriculture, forestry and land use has been introduced in the formal assessment and reporting of greenhouse gases emissions and sinks. This introduces challenging complications when preparing the EU greenhouse gas inventory. This Action will address the issue primarily at the European level through the development and integration of process models and observations. The Action will also assess the sectors sensitivity to climate change and its options for adaptation. Forest in JRC (2007-2013)

MONDE (Monitoring Natural resources for Development cooperation) The Action will establish dedicated monitoring techniques for promoting the sustainable management of natural resources in ACP countries. Particular attention will be paid to land cover and land use dynamics, fresh water availability, desertification, forest resources, coastal zone management, and marine resources, threats to biodiversity and the urban ecological footprint. Tools combining satellite data, advanced geospatial analysis and socio-economic models will be shared with Commission services and ACP countries in charge of sustainable management of natural resources and environmental protection. TREES-3 (Global Forest Resource Monitoring) The Action is proposed to take a fresh look at deforestation issues in a global perspective. The work will generate regional forest maps, track areas of rapid forest change and produce statistically valid estimates of cover change for the current decade. The drivers of deforestation will be identified at the regional levels, with a focus on Eurasian boreal forests and tropical forests The TREES-3 products will be used as inputs in future impact scenarios. Biomass maps and carbon emission/storage estimates will be produced for selected forest ecosystems and shared with Commission services, EU Delegations, International Organisations and partner countries.
