4. Station #1 Students studied sponges Sample of sponges under microscope
Measure mass of sponge dry
Measure mass of sponge wet
Calculate how many times its weight in water a sponge can hold

5. Station #2

6. Station #2 Students studied different phylums
Deceased marine life was placed in front of students
They were asked to draw and classify the organism
They also described characteristics of the organisms in the same phylum
Students also were asked questions about sea grasses and their importance

8. Station #3 Students were asked to use a refractometer
They placed a drop of water into the instrument
Measured salinity of the water
Classified water as seawater, brackish water or pure water
Students also tested quartz sand and South Florida Sand with hydrochloric acid
South Florida sand contains pieces of shell and deceased organisms with calcium carbonate
When calcium carbonate is combined with hydrochloric acid, it forms carbon dioxide

9. Station #4

10. Station #4 Students were asked to take two pictures each
After write one paragraph per picture describing what’s happening in the photograph

12. Station #5 Students were asked to use a simulator
They watched a video about coral reefs and answered questions about the video
They then analyzed a map of where coral reefs are around the world
They were asked things such as; where most coral reefs are and the salinity of most coral reefs

14. Station #6 Students used another simulator
They were asked to use the compass and a machine that measures strength to find the location of three manatees
They also evaluated what the location of the manatees meant about the time of year
