There’s a lot of water right? unfortunately only about 1% of the water on Earth is available for us to use and as our population grows we need more and more water

How much water do we need?
The average American uses 2,000 gallons of water a day! How do we do this? Over half of the water we use is consumed through our food, for example... It takes 634 gallons of water to make a hamburger! Americans use twice as much water as the global average and most of it is because of our diets.

Water Used for Food This chart shows the amount
of water used to grow different fruits, nuts, and vegetables. One walnut uses a lot of water!

Gallons of water per ounce of food
This diagram shows how many gallons of water are used to produce one ounce of any given food. What are some things that surprise you about this diagram? What are foods that you wouldn’t have expected to use as much/as little water as they do? How much is an ounce of food?

We need to save our water!
What would happen if we ran out of water? How can we change our diet to conserve water?
