15. “Dreams” and “Dream Deferred”
Deferred means to put something on hold until later
Barren means empty
Read poems and discuss what each poem is saying about dreams
What type of comparison is being made in each stanza of “Dreams” and what is the author trying to tell us through each comparison
What is the message that the author wants readers to think about and understand about life, the human condition, or human nature?
What poetic devices are used in the poem? How do they contribute to meaning?

If you don’t dream, you don’t have motivation, and if you have no motivation, you’ll lose the will to live.
Dreams give us hope and motivation when we need it.

If you don’t commit to your goals, you will lose your motivation and your dreams will disintegrate.
If you have a dream, pursue it before it’s too late.
Life is empty if you don’t have dreams.

What motivates you in your life?
Motivate means to have a reason or purpose for doing something
For example, if a person’s goal is to become a doctor, that person may take science courses and study really hard in high school in order to work towards this goal.

How many of you feel that listening to music makes you feel like someone else understands your feelings and emotions? Does anyone create music or any other form of art as a means of self-expression?
Music can be a powerful tool, but what if you know “understand music”?
Read the poem out loud in your group, and then read it a second time on your own.

21. Allusion
A brief reference to a person, place, event, or object that has historical, literary, cultural, or religious significance.
The writer expects you to recognize and respond to these references in some way as they contribute to and impact the meaning of the work they are referenced in.
