To get extra credit you must: 1. Attend a film screening/event listed on the ECU Film Studies FB page. You may NOT rent the films on your own. You MUST attend the screening. 2. Take notes during the film and/or the talk that precedes or follows it. 3. Obtain a signature from whoever is in charge of the discussion/screening, along with their name and address, so I know you were there. Tell them “Dr. Klein requests it.” 4. If there is a discussion after the film, you MUST stay for it and take notes. 5. Submit a copy of your screening notes for this film. If you lose the notes or fail to take notes you will NOT get full credit. 6. Submit a 3 page analysis of the film. To get full credit your paper MUST contain ALL of the following: -a one paragraph summary of the film’s plot -a one paragraph summary of what the guest speaker (if there was one) discussed and how it aided your viewing of the film -remainder of essay should analyze the film—taking whatever approach you wish -BUT you must discuss MORE than just the plot of the film. NO LATE ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED. Points: you will receive up to 25 points added to your final grade (which is a total of 1000 points). Please note: if you do not follow these directions (i.e., if you turn in a summary that is 2 pages long instead of 3 pages long, fail to turn in screening notes, etc), you will not receive the full 25 points.

4 Underground Film “It is a film conceived and made essentially by one person and is a personal statement by that person. It is a film that dissents radically in form, or in technique, or in content, or perhaps in all three. It is usually made for very little money, frequently under a thousand dollars, and it’s exhibition is outside commercial film channels.” -Sheldon Renan

5 "The early 70s had felt like the last moment of pure, popular culture fantasy and fakeness that I shared with my parents, when we were still united in this image of happy American famlihood…And The Carpenters' music seemed especially emblematic of that time.” –Todd Haynes

6 “The year is 1970, and suddenly the nation finds itself asking the question, ‘What if, instead of the riots and assassinations, the protests and the drugs, instead of the angry words and hard-rock sounds, we were to hear something soft and smooth, and see something of wholesomeness and easy-handed faith?’ This was the year that put the song onto the charts that made the Carpenters a household word.”
