What is PLM? CIMdata: Wikipedia:
It is important to note that PLM is not a definition of a piece, or pieces, of technology. It is a definition of a business approach to solving the problem of managing the complete set of product definition information—creating that information, managing it through its life, and disseminating and using it throughout the lifecycle of the product. PLM is not just a technology, but is an approach in which processes are as important, or more important than data. It is critical to note that PLM is as concerned with “how a business works” as with “what is being created.” Wikipedia:

Aim of PLM PLM capabilities support PLM activities to drive activities, decisions and data within the end-to-end PLM process, efficiently and cost-effectively. Examples include: Intellectual property management Product structure and reuse Engineering changes Stage-gate approvals Ideas and requirements Product configuration Quality tests and defects Product costs Development project status PLM can be viewed as both an information strategy and as an enterprise strategy. As an information strategy, it builds a coherent data structure by consolidating systems. As an enterprise strategy, it lets global organizations work as a single team to design, produce, support and retire products, while capturing best practices and lessons learned along the way. It empowers your business to make unified, information-driven decisions at every stage in the product lifecycle.

Core concepts of PLM: Universal, secure, managed access and use of product definition information. Maintaining the integrity of that product definition with configuration and related information throughout the life of the product or plant. Managing and maintaining business processes used to create, manage, disseminate, share, and use the information. While information includes all media (electronic and hardcopy), PLM is primarily about managing the digital representation of that information. Based on user experience over the years, PLM solutions can support a broad range of “products.” Examples of “products” include manufactured products, such as automobiles, computers, refrigerators, mobile phones, toys, and airplanes. Many products today also contain software, firmware, and electronic components whose data must be managed. Some organizations have long-lived assets that need to be managed such as utility distribution networks, e.g., power, telecommunications, water, gas, and cable TV, or facilities like plants, drilling rigs, buildings, airports, harbors, railway systems, and logistics warehouses. Other “products” include bridges, highways, and other civil engineering projects. Organizations across many industrial sectors have successfully used PLM solutions to manage product information across the lifecycle for all of these “products.” In the 1990’s, this lifecycle view expanded from managing primarily the mechanical elements of a product’s definition to include the electronics and software elements that have become a greater portion of many products. That expansion continued to push the perception of what “design” encompassed. PLM includes management of all product-related information from requirements, through design, manufacturing, and deployment. This information ranges from marketing requirements, product specifications, and test instructions and data, to the as-maintained configuration data from the field. The PLM solution links information from many different authoring tools and other systems to the evolving product configuration. At the same time, the lifecycle began to include production-focused attributes and information. Today, PLM encompasses significant areas of process. It’s not just program and project management processes. It is also the processes required to manufacture the product or plant, operate it in the field, and dispose or decommission it at the end of its useful life. PLM solutions help define, execute, measure, and manage key product-related business processes. Manufacturing and operational process plans are also now viewed as an inherent part of PLM. Processes, and the workflow engines that control them, ensure complete digital feedback to both users and other business systems throughout each lifecycle stage.

PLM Best Practices Develop iteratively Manage Requirements
Model Visually Use Components Verify Quality Control Change Milestone lifecycle Use References Use Cases as a Foundation The main goal of PLM implementations is to streamline and align business processes. With a successful PLM implementation, you'll improve communication track product records, button down and collaboratively share all changes and have a single version of the truth. Knowing the top PLM best practices for implementation can make the most of your PLM investment. PLM Best Practices Below are some best practice guidelines that may ease the implementation process, getting your PLM system up and running faster and easier. Develop iteratively Although it is always best to know all the requirements in advance, this is often an unrealistic goal. Therefore, do not spend an inordinate amount of time upfront on requirements and design without user validation. Manage Requirements Always keep in mind the requirements set by the users. Model Visually Utilize diagrams and mock ups as models. Create visual prototypes and get user validation before developing any method code. Don't spend a significant amount of time developing specs without prototyping the solution. Use Components Breaking down large projects into manageable pieces. Look for "Small Wins" that provide business value. Verify Quality Always make testing a major component of the project. Control Change Ensure that changes are synchronized and verified constantly. Milestone lifecycle different milestones in the development of the product. Different gateways are required and evaluated during the product development. Use References Check out "Writing Effective Use Cases" by Alistair Cockburn for a resource. Use Cases as a Foundation You will most likely write two types of use cases: High Level and Detailed. These Use Cases are a foundation for documentation, training material, and test plans.

PLM rewards PLM works: Towards continuous innovation process and implementing new technologies effectively. To respond quickly to changing market conditions and shorten the duration of time-to- market. To improve cycle times. To optimize product lifecycle processes. To lower scrap and rework costs. Towards closer contact with all departments, including customers and suppliers. To improve company performance and profitability.

Challenges Creating Vision Legacy data access/modification
Gather management/employee support Software selection and then training Mapping current processes to the new software (customization, new business processes, etc.) Vision – CIO should have a clear vision and goal. What they want to achieve and how. Key milestones set. Responsibilities defined etc. Data access – can legacy data be accessed/modified without any problems? Do we have to involve 3rd party translators? If so what is the cost? Change – not easy. People might feel threatened for their job/position. But as technology changes it is vital to change processes, business practices and software or hardware to be competitive and lead. Organizing team meetings to find solution to employee concerns would be good. PLM Software – which one? Mapping processes – would I be able to work right away or do I need to create/change my business processes and practices?
